Shares / Re: Listed Property
« on: April 12, 2013, 09:34:52 am »
I've recently left physical property to move into equity. I have considered having a portion in listed property due to the good dividends, but the fact that the dividends are classed as interest has kept me until now, but I'm beginning to reconsider.

It reminds me of futuristic sci-fi movies where you need ‘credits’ for services or products, swiping a device or implant. Who knows, maybe paying by Smartphone with virtual money is our future but yes, it will be ridiculed at first.

I spend a good chunk of my time in central and eastern africa. Mobile money is far far bigger than credit cards already. In my view virtual money is definitely the way we're heading. Paypal is the halfway point, but something like a bitcoin is quite likely where we'll end up. I doubt it will be the bitcoin itself. Even though it's an increadibly beautiful algorithm, the fact that it's not based on anything of real value will be it's demise. My prediction is that governments will start "printing" their own virtual currencies in the medium term future.

So in one day it went from $260 to $105 and the fall only stopped after the bitcoin exchange decided to close to let heads cool...

Shares / To help the ShareChat guys find old threads
« on: April 11, 2013, 02:41:45 pm »
I've set up a custom google search on the top of this page. It'll search not only this site, but also all the old threads on ShareChat.

Hope it helps.

Sincere thx for all your trouble Patrick!

If it wasn't for you we would still sit with that shit forum. Just wish they could fix the damn search function.

By some miracle they've added TapaTalk support and that's the only reason I'm reading the posts again.

Their forum software still suck though and their Web hosts suck balls too.

Anyway, cheers for now.
The threat of losing business is often the only thing to get companies moving. If only it worked with MTN!

To help you guys out with the search, I've added a new google search bar to the top of my forum. That will search my forum AND the old sharechat forum. That way at least you'll be able to find old posts. Give it a try and let me know if it helps.

I see someone used a few million dollars worth to buy a pizza!

Quote
Some call it the most famous pizza purchase in history: In May 2010, a programmer called Laszlo asked an online forum if anyone would buy him a couple of pies in exchange for 10 000 Bitcoins, an experimental online currency launched in 2009.

"No weird fish topping or anything like that," he wrote.

With each Bitcoin fetching less than a cent at the time, the order was worth about $41. Today, it would be valued at about $1.4m.

I like the idea aspire, but it'll be far harder to implement. It is something I'd like to do though. Maybe I'll do the simple one quickly, and then focus on the more advanced style competition

As to how I would see that working moneypenny, is possibly to have a leaderboard with the ranking according to annualised return.

Keep the ideas coming guys. I've already started development. At the moment I can read in a list of shares automatically. Still some way to go  ;D

I bought some satrix indi's in a dip a few days ago. Who would have thought they'd drop 5% in a few days! Oh well, they were bought for the long term...

Forums are made by where the members are. I've paid for the domain for a year, the hosting won't cost me a cent so I'll keep it running until this time next year at least.

At present:
FOORD Equity 90%
CML 3.3%
STX Indi 3.3%
Vodacom 3.3%

Watchlist:
SAB
MTN
PNC
MTA
IVT
RMI

I'm new to buying shares directly, so at the moment 90% of my investment is in FOORD equity. They've done well so I'll keep that there and use my monthly contributions to buying shares directly.

Shares / Share pick competition - What would you like?
« on: April 03, 2013, 11:56:23 am »
Since I'm a software developer by profession I could code a share pick competition and link it to the forum. How do you think it should work?

My thoughts are everyone gets to pick a portfolio of up to 5 shares, and decide what percentage of the portfolio each of those hold, then we do running calculations and save the monthly leaderboard at the end of the month.

Any other suggestions?

another option to help limit spam would be to force new users to click a confirm subscription link via the email account they provided .... this will at least slow down the spam registrations

Good call. I've just done that.
