Maybe this isn't the right place to ask, but does anyone know what p/e the JSE is currently trading at overall?

The PE ratio on the JSE Top-40 index reached nearly 18 times on Friday when the market hit a new high: http://www.fin24.com/Markets/Equities/JSE-sets-another-record-20140504

Down nearly 13% today, and I have a feeling it hasn't bottomed out yet...

So far I haven't sold anything, but I did get an IT3b for some interest earned.

Hope you don't mind a quick critique, this went out as a tip on a newsletter last year. You have some purchases which were for +- R10000 worth, which means you overpaid by about R80 each. Not a huge difference, but over time if could add up. That's the reason you're 0.5% down rather than 0.4%:

As trading accounts generally have a minimum fee, in this case R120 (the same as one of the larger on-line traders), buying anything under R30 000's worth of shares will mean your fees will be higher than normal. To show you how that affects you, imagine buying just 10 shares of Netcare at R19.80 each. Your purchase cost would be
10 x R19.80 per share = R198
+ R120 fee = R318
Divided by 10 shares = R31.80 per share.

So in this case you would have overpaid by 60.6% for this share, compared to the usual 0.4% when dealing with R30 000 or more. This means that even if this share gains 60% (highly unlikely in a short period of time) you'll barely break even. This may have been an extreme example, but it does show how important minimising your fees are in an investment strategy.

I use them, mostly because they're the cheapest for me.

Positives:
-0.4% per transaction, minimum of R120, same as the competition!
-R800/year subscription fee.
-If you trade 5 times per year there is no subscription fee, so in actual fact the subscription fee should be R600.05, just buy 5 1c penny shares if you must
-I do trade more than 5 times a year on regular amounts, so for me there is in effect no subscription fee.

Negatives
-As far as I can see, no stop loss.
-The website wouldn't let me in a couple of times (had to call them to reset my password).

What we did last year was force the rights offers to be taken. I think it only happened once though. I'll likely do the same this year again. When does it happen?
