As a follow on to the last post, take a read here: http://www.etfsa.co.za/news/_latest/satrix_indi_focus_aug2012.pdf

I love the graph, percentage of unit trust funds that don't beat the INDI. Over 5 years not one unit trust fund could beat it!

Hi Guys,

I've been doing some research and would like to start investing. Naturally STXIND come up and it seems to perform quite well. I recently bought a car and have a balloon payment that I would like to pay off before it is actually due.

I have +- R1300 to put into the pot per month and I would like to do it over the next 4 years. Would putting this into the STXIND etf be wise? Should I split the amount and diversify into other etfs? or am I wasting my time.

I'm new to the whole investing game so any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

It's never a bad time to get into the indi. Take a look at it's all time graph: http://bigcharts.marketwatch.com/advchart/frames/frames.asp?show=&insttype=&symb=ZA%3ASTXIND&x=49&y=9&time=20&startdate=1%2F1%2F1996&enddate=1%2F1%2F1999&freq=2&compidx=aaaaa%3A0&comptemptext=&comp=none&ma=0&maval=9&uf=0&lf=262144&lf2=0&lf3=0&type=64&style=370&size=4&timeFrameToggle=false&compareToToggle=false&indicatorsToggle=false&chartStyleToggle=false&state=15

Not once in it's history will you find a 4 year period where you lose money. And things are actually better than the graph suggests as it doesn't take into account the dividends.

If we take the historical average of 20%, your R1300 a month will be worth +-R100k in four years time, or about R80k in todays money: http://www.investorchallenge.co.za/calc_compound.php?initial_deposit=0&monthly_deposit=1300&yield=20&years=4&inflation=6

Financially, you're most likely better off investing the capital and continuing to make your car payments. If it was my cash I would bet that the market was going to beat 8% p.a. in the next few years.

The next best option in my opinion, and only do this if being in debt bothers you, would be to pay the car off and set up a debit order with Satrix to the same (or more) value as the car loan. Just don't pay it off and try "save" to put it in the market. You'll be amazed at how quickly extra cash vanishes when it's available!

Yozzi - With present investments and pension my income is sufficient to meet all my needs. However I don't take funds out of my trading account (which is 75% of my investments) so these funds are not used to support my lifestyle - all dividends are used to purchase shares and when I can afford it I put more funds into my trading account by juggling my current account, card accounts, and bond account. My dividends run about at about R35,000 p.m. thanks to the government now taking 15% divi tax. So in essence my share portfolio grows annually based on how well my portfolio performs - however that is wealth based on a paper value as I am still holding the shares in the portfolio. What I am alluding to is at present day value I can afford most of my wants, but extend my longevity to age 80 and I don't know whether I will be in the same position I am now, somehow I don't think so, I could for example get below CPI increases on my pension and that shortfall would need to be made up somehow, so I am happy to take 18% increase in portfolio value, but aim for + 20% so that CGT and other taxes don't take too much of my available funds and don't force me into selling off capital to survive
Hope this explains my views on how much is enough

Is the R35k p.m. a type perhaps? On a R3mil portfolio that would be a return of 14%. Is it not perhaps R35k per year? Congrats on getting yourself into such a solid position though. Mind if I ask what your day job used to be?

You need to own the shares at close on the LDT. Usually a friday on the JSE.

Bloomberg must have been slow to update. The 15 minute adjustment script kicks off at 9am, so that's 18 minutes you sold. It can happen but shouldn't.

In theory, you should have +- R4 923,51 less cash as the price drop would usually be equal to the dividend paid. Could I "correct" this for you?

It'll be impossible to program for that. That data isn't published untill too late, it would mean rolling back transactions, or reducing the amounts. All a serious nightmare to code for.

We took all shares that trade less than 16 times a dayout of the competition, and there's a 15 minute delay in pricing so it get's updated to the real price. Could it be that you're just a great trader? :)

How does your real life portfolio look?

Between you and me, and the rest of the internet, I'm never buying a property again!

I may however buy property stocks at some point, but I don't ever feel like being trapped into a single location and a lie yields investment.

I read somewhere the the American dream of owning a house was thought up by factory owners in the states to keep workers from being able to move to areas with better paying jobs...

Ok now the rights issue has been exercised.  So their holdings are right. The fact that they're in the negative is pretty unavoidable as we always force a holdings option to be taken... It has made the leaderboard a little weird though... How to solve???
