If it's all foreign shares it won't matter if the rand crashes as your portfolio value will have a rise equal to the currency crash. In a total hyperinflation scenario, your only risk would be the time difference between selling and being able to convert to a safer currency somehow.

I do keep weighing up the options, comparing the tax hit to potential growth, but I don't have an answer just yet. It's highly likely I'll spend 6 months and a day outside of SA in the next few years, so that would be the ideal time to do it.

In the meantime, I keep taking out as much as I can with the R30k exemption. This year it works out to about R80k, but using the 4% rule and the decreasing amount I can withdraw in the R30k exemption, it means I'm never able to get the money out! First world problems...

Being new to ETF's, I was wondering how this one tracks it's underlying index if no trades are done for the day.
Does management buy and sell at market close to correct the mismatch?

The price for the instrument will match the index, you just won't see the change until someone buys. But have a look at the live pricing. For instance, I now see the price in my portfolio sitting at 2807, but the bid is 2810 and the offer is 2830. So I know I'm worth more than indicated!

Thanks GCR, it's a presonal bone of contention of mine, as I have 35% of my investments in active (my early years investing), and can't move it without heavy capital gains tax :(

Divtrx holds 22 shares, all equally weighted around 4.5%, so I would say that's fairly good diversification, but probably a little overweight in the other counters! Time will tell if Orca has picked the next cml in one of those again!

Ag dammit, there goes my week end. Please give a better description of the wood? is it like paperwood in a roll?
The wood is from some edging you buy to seal off the edges of projects you're working on. They usually come pre-glued, but I found two types at timber city without glue. Fairly thin, but you have to boil or steam ir to get it to roll into a ring shape. I'll go with GCRs assumption that it's meranti, it cost me R4 a meter!

I rolled mine thinner than needed on the inside, and kept rolling until it was thicker than I wanted on the outside, then sanded it down to the shape I liked, and inner diameter needed. I didn't have a lathe, so I used a dremel, but I think a lather would work better.

My father was a carpenter for many years, sadly he stopped when I was old enough to take an interest, and never passed on any of his skills. Now it's something I'm quite interested in, if only I had more time, and the space for equipment!

Yep, that's pretty much the process. They're impregnated with cyanoacrylic which should make them pretty hardy, time will tell I guess. I did initially look into making them from a single piece of wood, but the lack of a lathe and the reports of how they crack under pressure made me go for a bent wood design rather.

I wasn't sure what type of wood it was, timber city only has veneer edging, and only this and another very light coloured wood was available without being pre-glued. The light coloured wood wouldn't bend even when boiled for ages, so I went with this. The colour came out really nicely so I'm glad I did. I might try the light coloured wood again, though it'll probably mean a number of boil and bend cycles to get it to a small enough radius.

Was carpentry once a hobby of yours?

It's quiet here at the moment, so I thought I'd show you what I worked on this weekend. For once it's not an app or a bicycle :D

As you know I'm all about stealth wealth, so now that the time has come to get a set of wedding bands, I decided to go the DIY route. I've always liked the look and feel of wood, and after some googling I saw that it could be possible to make rings out of it. Headed to timber city, and spent about R200 on wood, sandpaper and glue, then proceeded to glue my fingers together over an evening, but here's the outcome:

Turns out I bought too much wood. I got 5 meters, but only used 1 meter making 3 mistakes and two great rings.

Step one is boiling, step two is rolling and glueing. That's actually the hard part, making sure you don't splinter the wood or glue your fingers together. I did both. Repeatedly. The next step involves sanding. Steps 4 through 258 are also sanding!

Here's the end result. I like it, my fiance likes it, and it's very tough. As much as I tried I couldn't break one of the mistakes.

The smaller ring was far harder to make, but the fiance loves it  :)

One thing I should add when planning your portfolio is using your R30K p/y CGT free allowance. and of course your TFSA. So, as it stands now to minimize what you give to the government:

REITS: R1.2mill at 6% yield gives R72K - tax free income
Sell R30K of high growth, non dividend paying, stock per year - around R300K's worth.

Then 16 years of decent dividend paying stocks at R2.5K per month compounded at 15% per year gives around R2mill tax free lets say 3.5% dividend yield = R70k per year

So gives you a yearly salary of R172K tax free income. Of course they'll just nail you when you open your wallet  :LHST:

So, my idea is:

REITS and high growth stock in a normal trading account.
Using the TFSA for good dividend paying ETF's

lastly, if you need more - maybe high growth stocks (CGT) might be best from a tax point of view - 1/3 18% - so 6% for quite a bit vs 15% on dividends. Of course, this is just from tax point of view, IMO there are other reasons why I like dividend stock - but there is definitely some room (and good reasons) in my portfolio for some NPN/ APN and others.

Fantastic post, I might do a blog post on this at some point if you don't mind.

On the whole - the dates do stay the same. But just remember there is a declared date, last date to trade and pay date. There can be up to 2 month between the first and last.

Attached are the last 4 divis.

So similar to my own story.  Now I'm buying REITs as well. Very cool. Looking at what the real performance will be like in 10 years time. I hope to tell the tale

I've gone from 100% property (my house and two rental apartments) to 100% equity over the last few years.

In my case equities have far exceeded property. I have invested in unit trusts before, but I don't like the fees, so now I do an even split between the Satrix Indi and the eRafi indi in my regular portfolio and my tax free portfolio.

Don't think I could make more through CFDs, I would quite likely lose cash and gain stress.

Just for an update, as I'm getting closer and closer to calling it quits, I've started buying DIVTRX for the decent dividend and also some growth.

T-Thunder a lot of people have their tax free savings with EE as the costs are just so low. It was always my recommendation. I'm changing that now though, not because I don't think the money is safe there (I do) but because ABSA stockbrokers now offers tax free savings accounts at 0.2%. I've already put my money into EE for this year, but next years batch will go to ABSA stockbrokers, unless someone else offers less than 0.2%...

And welcome to Lamak, hopefully Mr_Dividend will pipe up here, he does exactly that, earns all his income from dividends. I've recently been buying the divtrx fund myself to get growth and higher dividends, there's a discussion here if you're interested: shareforum.co.za/shares/coreshares-dividend-aristocrats-etfsp-sa-dividends-aristocrat/

I'm sure a few more people will pipe up here with more advice.
