Very true. The world index is at levels last seen in September 2013. If you're still working and buying, that's not a bad thing. It'll come back someday, but who knows when that will be... I'm still buying every month as per my usual plan.

STXIND over the same period? 20.91%. Not one unit trust in South Africa beat the indi. So more effort = less returns. All the stats I have show that 80% of fund managers can't beat an index globally, but they're generally 3 or 5 year stats. I'd love to see some 10 year plus stats for the world market. I suspect over time the number of losing managers will grow.

It's been rather quiet around here about the new retirement annuity/pension fund laws? What does everyone think?

So you're able to put away 27.5% of your income before tax. I think that's huge. If you're paying 42% tax on your earnings it makes a massive difference really quickly.

It'll also be very useful to those have other sources of income. If you've got REITs or a paid up property, your dividends or rent payments are taxed just like income, so putting away 27.5% of everything you earn could actually take you down a tax bracket or two.

On the downside you're not allowed to take it all out at retirement, only a third, and the rest has to go to into an annuity. On the whole, probably not a bad thing for most people, though personally I'd rather not have an annuity and use that cash to increase investments in lower cost index funds.

Also there's a R350k limit, but if you can hit that you're probably not very concerned about your retirement in any case...

Just don't calculate the $ growth for any of those, unless of course you want to cry...

Great read. That goes along with the global consensus too from my reading on bogleheads. Now knowing that, would the difference have you leave the security of dividend payments for a more tax beneficial capital growth situation?

No complex equations but it seems to work. Just need to confirm the workability for this country.

Not only does it seem to work, in most cases using the 4% rule has you dying far wealthier than when you retired.
