In theory I would imagine that if you could get to $50 a week in a fairly proven way, then as you said, you could just apply more capital to get to $500 a week. What would stop you from increasing capital x 100 to get to $5000 a week then? Aside from needing a giant pair of course...

How many hours a week are you averaging now if you include all research etc?

I'm no expert, seriously not at all, but I was under the impression that most of the bad news is already priced in. That, and the fact that the capital gains tax will really hurt me are 2 reasons why I'm not doing anything right now.

As for a rand recovery, I still think we'll see a R1 or so improvement should Zuma be recalled. Could happen post election, especially if the ANC loses a city or two.

FYI, my holdings are about 40% STXIND, 55% DIVTRX and 5% VWRD.

Shares / Re: Wait. ETF sales are ALWAYS taxed as CGT?

We never actually resolved this. This link http://www.moneyweb.co.za/mymoney/moneyweb-personal-finance/how-is-tax-calculated-when-you-sell-an-etf/ still says CGT only, but nobody managed to confirm it, and my research also hasn't unearthed anything yet. Has anyone tested the waters on this?

Edit: Just found the other thread Orca opened where a very well qualified tax expert has also confirmed, ETFs are only taxed as capital gains. This is good news to me as I only own ETFs... Two threads merged.

Welcome, it's fantastic that you started so young!

When you say you're using ABSAs stock platform, I hope you mean the ETF only account/TFSA, the regular account is too expensive. If it's the ETF only account, you also need to make sure you're not splitting up your funds too much every month. Ideally you'd buy R10k per ETF at a time, otherwise you're paying too much in fees.

For example, ff you're buying say R500 in 4 ETFs, you'll pay R80 in fees on R2000, which is 4% in fees. Far too high! If on the other hand you buy one ETF for R10 000 a month, you only pay 0.2%.

I have STXIND and DIVTRX in almost a 50% 50% locally, but in my international account I have 100% VWRD (similar to DBXWD but cheaper). That's what I do, but I can't recommend anything here, it's all up to you. If I could do it over again, knowing how useless the government has ended up being, I'd probably have moved all my money offshore as I earned it, and would have gone 100% into VWRD.

Sygnia has the best RA in the country. The one I recommend is the Sygnia Skeleton Balanced 70 Fund. I personally only like them for RAs as I like my other investments in 100% equity, and normal ETFs.

Like Orca, I also think unit trusts are a waste of time. Here's my reasons: http://investorchallenge.co.za/only-idiots-still-own-unit-trusts/

Property is a personal choice, and while I don't think I'll ever own another one, a lot of people like to. I think it's more a question about your lifestyle wants than an investment choice. Another link: http://investorchallenge.co.za/the-last-house-ill-ever-own/

If need be, we can cut out wine, beer and eating out and save about R2k.

No, never-ever do that, life is meant for living.

Yes, I can hear Patrick rolling this eyes :D but he is wrong - just go for it.

Haha, how about getting a bicycle and saving on train tickets instead. They also run on beer, so you can consider the odd drink as refueling :)

And there we have the expected NPA appeal. Wonder how long it will take to see if the court will allow it or not... In the case of Oscar, it took about 3 months for him to be denied, which means nothing happens until after elections. I imagine if the ANC gets slaughtered in the elections, and is denied leave to appeal then we'll see some action from Luthuli house.

Wow, spending around R10k for a couple is very impressive. Are those fairly normal living costs for a couple in Portugal? I do have two Portuguese friends, one a doctor, and the other in banking. The doctor earns just 1200 euro a month, and the banking guy, who claims his salary is really good for Portugal is on 1600 euro, and apparently they live very well in Lisbon.

I can't remember if you mentioned which city/town you're in?
