How does this work
« on: June 08, 2016, 03:43:10 pm »
Hey @Patrick

I read there on mybroadband that you are the main man to talk to regarding this.

I would like to know if our Platinum Wealth Forum and Club can join the challenge?

However, I have no clue how the actual competition work.

Hey Thor, welcome. It's quite simple actually. First you have to register and login on the forum. Once that's done just go to www.investorchallenge.co.za and click on the buttons on the top.

Start with "My Holdings" to see how much cash you've got, then go to "Buy Shares". It should be fairly straight forward. You'll probably also want to create a group so you can compare how you do against each other.

Not sure how sensitive this topic is, but how did you do it? The integration?

I mean WOW! why the whole of SA is not in that investor challenge is beyond me, I mean it is so well integrated. Massively good job. Kudo's

I wasn't even aware of this investor challenge, I created the platinumwealth.co.za/forum for the investment club I am sure you saw on mybroadband, my idea is under investment clubs on the forum I want other investement clubs to register and then I give them Private sub forums just visible to their club members to make communication easier.

I think I am going to also add a link on there for members to sign up to this investor challenge platform I love it.

Ah thanks Thor.

It wasn't too bad actually. Initially all the 15 minute delayed figures were on the JSE website, all nicely organised on one page, so I simply scraped that page. Then the JSE had to go kill that page and put each share on it's own page, which I was rather upset about as I'd have to go and scrape hundreds of pages which would take too long. Then I found that the figures were also published on bloomberg, in a much more streamlined way. It still means calling hundreds of links, but at least it's quick enough.

A bigger issue came when I allowed selling in year 2. People logged into their online brokerage account, saw the live prices and traded on the system knowing what would happen in 15 minutes. As the site barely makes any cash, I couldn't afford live prices, so in the end I just added a pending system to the shares which corrects the prices to match what they should be. This sees to have worked well.

If you could tell the whole of SA to join then the site would make enough to afford live prices, see what you can do ;)

I saw your investment club site. Is it for actual investment clubs ie. people pooling cash and investing together, or is it just for groups of people who discuss different investments, but invest individually?

Very very very interesting Patrick. Your a talented sir I must admit.  I am blown away.

As for platinumwealth.co.za, the actual forum is open to the public to talk about general finance, it's a finance forum and a by product of finance is investing and retirement and all that so the forum has hidden sections specifically for full on investment clubs like ours.

You will see there is a section called investment clubs now what you don't see is in that section is a completely separate hidden forum accessible only to members of that particular investment club.

My idea is to have a bunch of investment clubs on there each with there own hidden forum as well as access to their public side and the rest of the forum.

As for the general public that does not belong to a investment club they are simply free to join and learn about general finance and budgeting etc provided the forum gets a little traction of course.
