Monetary policy:

Left unchanged

On Ukraine: 

“It’s a very complex geopolitical picture which could evolve,” he says.

and

“Geopolitical risks’ surrounding Ukraine would impact euro zone more than other parts of the world if they intensify beyond where they are today."

On future ECB easing:


“I would say that the Governing Council is comfortable with acting next time but first we want to see the staff projections” that will be updated next month.


In the USA:

Initial jobless claims dropped by 26 000 to a seasonally adjusted 319 000.

Mittal reported 1Q net loss narrowed, supported by higher steel and iron ore shipments. (Closed SA +5.96% @ 4000)

Rand firmer after higher than expected inflation data yesterday, interest rate increase expected this week.

Dow ended last night +0.97%, Nas +0.86%, S&P +0.81%, futures up on Chinese data.

All these happy-chappies boosted by China’s better-than-expected manufacturing data earlier this morning (3:45am), prev & , expected 48.1, actual 49.7.  Also Bank of China’s pumping of 120 billion Yuan ($19.2 billion) into interbank markets this week, all in effort to stabilize market sentiment.
