Simon Brown till death porfolio.

Worth a listen

https://justonelap.com/simons-till-death-us-part-portfolio/

What would you change add?

Personally, I think the JSE would fit in there and maybe vodacom. Don't really get Metrofile as a long term hold myself. Probably would ditch the BHP as well. Might switch out metrofile for a IT stock - EOH. I would also change Shoprite to SPAR - or out the food retailer and go for Mr Price or Steinhoff. Would be hard to pick between Discovery or Aspen for the medical side. And no room for BATS? Smokers gotta smoke :)

Doing a bit of a portfolio make over as half my money was coming from a small trust and this is now being closed so will have a bit of cash to inject - luckily, div yields are pretty decent at the moment

BTW he mentions doing "site visits" as FBR's location and it being tax deductible -  I wonder how many shares you would need and how many visits would seem reasonable as a deductible expense to the taxman?

Thanks for the link Mr_Dividend. I enjoyed the listen.

The only stocks I would choose of the list would be Shoprite, City Lodge, Famous Brands and Woolworths. I either do not understand the others or do not like the long term prospects. Capitec I do not like because of the leverage and what a full blown credit crisis could do to them.

I respect Simon Brown, but was suprised when he panicked and sold good SA stocks after nenegate. I also find he is too quick to dismiss the smaller companies such as Choppies and Grand Parade, if you are going to get great returns going forward some up and coming stocks are worth having.

My sense is that Simon seldom delves into the small caps and tends to leave that to Keith McLachlan who has been operating in this space for years. Keith quite frequently presents on Simon's Power Hour

GCR - sounds like he has quite a few portfolio's - in small caps he did mention owning Santova and Calgro.

DiVT - personally, Capitec is one of my favorites - wish I went overweight when ABL crisis was happening - but happy I bought when i did. These guys rate it as the best bank in the world btw http://www.businessdaytv.co.za/shows/newsleader/2016/07/01/ranking-sa-s-banks . Chatted to a guy I was sitting with a few months back - he offloaded his free shares when they split from PSG figuring that if PSG didn't want them, nether did he. 7500 shares @ around R2.  ??? Oh well, as long as he kept the PSG shares we would have come out OK!

You should do well out of Capitec Mr_Div, I am hoping my Trustco shares will have even a tenth of the Capitec shares success, but do not want another bank share. It is stories like the one you have about Capitec that cause me to keep shares such as Grand Parade and Trustco, out of fear of telling a 'Capitec' story one day.

GPl seems to betting a fair amount of air time lately - sentiment might be changing. Although I did sell from my main portfolio - plan to add them to my riskier small  portfolio.

@ MrD - I hold Santova - no Calgro

See Hanna Ziady - interviewed Keith McLachlan around mid/small caps - no punting just his reasons for investing in these stocks. I subscribe to his arguments for investing in these stocks - the trick is to select one that are likely to grow because they have a good model and a competent management group. I also look at holding of stock by the owners and whether they buy or sell shares in their companies - sort of shared and vested interest in where the company goes in the future - I get nervous when owners constantly sell shares doesn't give me confidence. The exception seems to be the Wapnick family and Octodec they put in every little bit of funds into their company - though I don't invest in property.
