Building a portfolio from scratch

Came across this webinar today, quite nice learning for beginners.

I like Simon's point about hacking the admin fee charged by Satrix every 6 months-at around 20min into the presentation. >:D

You have multiple choices, the one is buy into a good unit trust, the next is investing in shares that the unit trusts buy, If you have time money and a sence of the economy and what is going to happen with a bunch of manipulators doing their thing with the shares you want to buy , you start trading.

Critieria 1 : Money
2 , research, but don,t expect the market to think the same
3, More Money
4, So unless you up for fun and games and balls of steel and a lot of research which mostly mean jack, just get a unit trust

I dont think many of us playing this game have not taken a major hit on a investment issue.

But as with orca, shrewd investment has recovered his losses. But that does not come from stock picking, it takes research and knowledge, and a slight bit of a % of luck

@nios: I suggest as a beginner that you buy 80%-100% ETFs and 0%-20% blue chips (SASOL, Anglo American, liberty life at a fair price PS: the ones a just mentioned are fairly priced in my books).

May I suggest:
20% RMB-Midcap
20% Satrix Divi
20% Satrix Industrial
20% Satrix 40
10% Anglo American
10% Sasol

If you want international exposure then I suggest a foreign-domiciled unit trust such as coronation global managed.

But hey make your own choice its your money.

(have to say it, coz i dont like giving stock picks out)

oh on a side note, I suggest as a beginner you play it really safe in the beginning, until you get into all the economics and analysis of it all. Im sure all of us have made mistakes here by buying what we shouldn't have bought and selling what we shouldn't sell. Fortunately my mistakes werent too expensive and iv learnt from it. try not to make yours expensive either (I promise everyone makes mistakes, even you will) :) good luck mate  ^-^

I am from otherside of the tree, as a beginner one should take some risk. If u going to invest in Sasol / BIL / MTN blue chips u can just as well buy unit trust. Not that I am saying you should bond your house and buy 1time, start small, and learn about risk and reward. Play it safe with your pension, but have a small kitti tp play with. (spillchiker on)

If it scares you, it's a sign you need to do it

Some yes.

Not like me, started CFD's and went directly for Alsi, had no clue what was going on but did it anyway.

Four parts stupid, one part brave.

If it was not for tax, I would convert 80% of my portfolio into SATRIX. A year to go still.
The biggest mistake I made was to invest my retirement funds the same week in 2008 when the crash started and sold at the very bottom in 2009. Lost 45%.
I started here with nothing and still have most of it left.

Might I ask what made you sell? personally I would have just held on, till the market recovered. statistically speaking there is about 1 market crash every ten 10 years, and markets will recover at some stage. you just have to ride it through, if you have the time horizon to do so. I would have taken the opportunity to buy over sold and discounted equity just as the global markets where starting to recover in about 2010. As I always say risk is relative with relation to time.

Neil. That crash was prolonged and nobody could predict the bottom. It could easily have carried on another 20% down. Just my bad luck that I got out at the very bottom. By the way, it was a Managed Account.
That 45% loss was the best thing that ever happened to me.
I started here with nothing and still have most of it left.

You are quite correct aae. I was hell bent to recover as quickly as possible. That loss got me studying stocks 10 hours per day and 8 days per week and it worked out for me. CML did it.
I started here with nothing and still have most of it left.
