Hi Moneypenny - excuse my ignorance, but, I have to ask the question - what is the purpose of listing those shares which were up/down on a daily basis per the previous day. Would it be in place to assist investors who don't trade over a platform?
Also as an aside you list AVI as a new low of 9237 - would this be over a trailing 12 month period?

Hallo gcr, I have to do it every day for my own record purposes anyway as I study patterns so I thought maybe somebody else could find value in it as well. Sharing is caring you know.  8)  Tell you one thing, if I don't do for a few weeks, I'm really clueless of whats moving on the markets and in which direction and I lose my 'feel' for market.  Yes, 52 week high and lows.  Originally started with in in 2006 whilst day-trading, my thinking was somebody could just scan it before they go to bed if they are not in the mood for the days' dreary news, just the ups & down direction wise. But yes, I study direction like a maniac.   :D  I can stop publishing it if nobody finds it worthwhile, but I'll still be doing it in the background.  :)

No problem with your reasoning at all. I presume you still trade hence the need to keep records of movements and patterns. I use my brokers charting facility to determine the direction of my share portfolio and also shares I am interested in buying - to me a picture is more meaningful and if there was a dip at any point over the window period 3, 5 and 10 years then I look at the sens bulletins at the time preceding and at the time of the dip.
Your post records the previous days movements but it would seem that you are not necessarily limiting recording the top 10 up/down movements - so to me it is unclear as to whether you are taking in the entire markets daily moves up/down and then selecting a few that have move significantly. Also are you sucking off the entire markets shares prices daily and plotting their movements or do you have a selection of say the 100/200 companies
Interesting exercise - back in 2004 and beyond I ran a spreadsheet where I physically plotted price movements on some 100 shares per day was a real pain capturing each day but as soon as my stockbrokers introduced their charting I stopped the daily recording as they did it albeit on closing prices. They also had a facility (20 shares per subset) where you could group a number of shares together and each morning I would go through the subsets and then make a value call as to which additional counters I wanted to add to portfolio. Paid many months of school fees but it was a valuable learning curve - I have been involved in the local exchange going back to 1967 when I first started work.
Wish you well in your endeavours

I like the thread. I'm too lazy to read the finance news, and even if I do I don't really care about the stuff they do. This gives me a quick idea on what's happening on the JSE.

But GCR had a good question, for your new lows, what is the timeframe? If I bought Coronation at R10 a share, and then it went up to R150 and now down to R45, is R45 the new low or do we need to wait for it to hit R2.70 which I think is where it was in 2003?

For new highs I think it's just the highest ever price right? Or is there also a timeframe involved? Like above is Coronation goes to R60 tomorrow is that a new high?
