The Investor Challenge / Re: The 2014 Challenge has begun!
« on: January 07, 2014, 08:24:28 pm »
If I recollect correctly, the selling option idea was one of mine but that came around to enable one to realign a portfolio during the competition should circumstances
change not to trade and cheat.

Couple of examples:

I buy BTI, midyear, smokes get banned, as least I can sell and buy something else.
I buy Gold shares and the gold price goes for a loop like last year, at least I can sell and buy something else.
I buy construction and it does not perform, but the gold price goes through the roof, I can sell my construction and buy gold shares.
CML gets to high and Think it has reached its limit for the year, be able so sell and buy something with growth potential.

I don,t think it was ever meant to be a trading option, just a portfolio realign option.

Maar dan is daar altyd mense wat the dam onder se hoender se poepol uitruk.

If you can,t play the game in the spirit of things, go get your rocks off somewhere else.

Or get reported and eliminated with your ip blocked

Going to cause the end of this competition.

Nobody plays with the unsporting type, not even children.

Just restrict the competition to the top 100 companies as the other competitions do.  No manipulation and covers all the shares any investor will buy.

in the context of the competition I recommended that we split the competition into two parts those who wanted to enter the competition as investors and those who wanted to enter as traders. This recommendation was not carried

It may still be carried out. I could easily have 3 leader boards, one for traders (who sell at profit), one for investors, and the current one.

and a seperate one for those playing against the spirit of the game :D

is this now a find the loophole and exploit competition.

Read the guidelines and stick to the spirit of the competition.

A few people  trying to exploit for gains are ruining it all and making things less enjoyable as it is supposed to be.

What satisfaction can be gotten from winning something and cheating.

Thus far the only thing that has happened is that griffin has managed to negate his win from year into a cheater won status.

so who cares if he won anymore, he is now labelled as a cheater in my books. Lance Armstrong comes to mind.

If he had a point to prove he could have used a different alias for it and the just informed Patrick.

Patrick tries something good and many people enjoy the game but then come the spoilers and fuck up everything

Maybe buying should be restricted till after the market closes and before it opens

being able to play the game delayed and know real time pricing has but a different dimension on the sell feature.

Some stocks do weird things during a day

Looking into the share, there seems to be no reason, with their daily trade history and such taken into account.

so presume there could be rumours or a bit of manipulation in progress again.

There are guys out there that do trading for a living.

One of the reasons this game should be limited to the top 200 on capitalization.

There could be gems out there that are going to shoot the moon out, but lets be realistic.

split the game, investors challenge, gambler challenge, less in the spirit of the game players O:-)

the 13.50 trades were simultanous, so the lowest prices was registered as last trade price on the jse pricing info

As the game past is now history, it may be fun to save the first games bought on record and update the prices to see where they end next year, ie challenge 1.

and bit of glance in the past, no need to just kill it

I note that TCS was suspended today, whats happens if they in ones portfolio, NIL value, a total loss or do they stay there at last traded price.

I would think a total loss and nil value as the shares can,t trade

I don't know about arseholes much...  Personally, I "invested" in AH-vest based on some personal connections, and the fact that it was at an attractive price point.  It recovered slowly, over 6 months, to similar levels it held a year ago.  Hardly the same as buying a 1c share and seeing it double in value in a day or two  ::)  While I concede that the volumes traded is not realistic, there is no way I could have exploited a loophole in the game way back in May.  Some of the comments here really do sound like sour grapes  ;D

At a glance, there are several interesting shares in the sub-R1 list.  Jasco, Gijima and Cadiz come to mind.  I'd say cap it at 10c rather than R1.

I get far more upset at guys having ETFs in their portfolios.  Perhaps they didn't expect that Patrick would make it visible for all to see  8)
