Shares / Re: GlencoreXstrata - GLN

Help me understand this drop of 87% since listing in 2001. Is it primarily because of the global financial crises, and therefore the whole sector is affected; or is it because of bad business deals by Gelncore itself?

Are you planning to buy pre-listing? I can't recall what those types of shares are called.

What software do you recommend for tracking share prices from JSE? I also want to get history, PE ratios, etc. Free is good but I'm open to paying for a subscription

"London - Four years after a stock market listing made them billionaires, and months after the last ban on them selling shares expired, most Glencore managers are still sticking with their boss Ivan Glasenberg - and even preparing to invest more in the firm." There is a new share is coming soon to Glencore.

I believe the share price is undervalued, maybe even cheap. Ivan Glasenberg may have the image of Scrooge McDuck but he gets the job done in a very tough market. So I rate this one a buy after this news.

Shares / Re: Investing in SA or taking/leaving money overseas

This is a very interesting thread. I'm currently living in China and I was planning to take all my income from back to SA because it will be double, and invest it in dividend stocks. After reading this thread, it may be wise to keep a good portion in USD for emergencies.

In China you can easily get a bank account in USD. I have a credit card from ICBC Bank which is 5000 RMB and over 700 USD. When I spend locally it goes off my RMB balance, and online transactions goes from USD balance. Even though their currency is regulated, it's pegged directly to the USD.

Shares / Naspers vs Alibaba
« on: September 10, 2015, 01:18:49 am »
Alibaba is a barometer of the Chinese consumer (e-commerce). Has declined by 37% this year due to plunging consumer demand.
Tell me why NPN should not similarly be affected.

These are completely different business models. Alibaba is an online retail platform with B2B (Alibaba.com), B2C (Tmall.com) and C2C (Taobao.com) platforms. Its main income is from foreign trade companies in China, who pay for their listings and associated advertising and keyword optimisation, to get sales for their b2b stores on Alibaba.com while Tencent (Naspers 36% owned) primary income is from online and mobile gaming, content distribution and premium subscriptions, some online and mobile ads on Wechat.

It's my opinion that Tencent will continue to grow even if Alibaba's income drops because they are dependent on different factors.

Listen to this outstanding interview with the company founder Brian Joffe with Alec Hogg. This company is valued over R200 billion and still generating profits and growth for it's shareholders.

Here's an excellent analysis of AdvTech growth prospects from Moneyweb's Investor magazine. They have always been more conservative than Curro. But now they have a R3 billion investment plan, especially in their schools division.

They remain a takeover target both locally and internationally. Remember the Curro offer was at a 42% premium.

Seems a safe bet to spend 50% on ETF, and the balance on individual shares.

Being particularly useless at timing the markets I just buy when the money hits my account. Fortunately research seems to favour that over waiting or dollar cost averaging, with you coming ahead in about two third of the cases by buying asap if memory serves me right.

Hi Patrick does that mean you usually follow Dollar-Cost Averaging method of buying shares?

Why would SA approach the IMF for a bailout (which leads to a regime change according to this journalist)? The BRICS Bank (New Development Bank) has been launched in Shanghai. South Africa would be stupid to go to IMF now that BRICS Bank is in operation.

As a South African living in China, I believe it's unlikely the Chinese government would NOT help the ANC government (Mandela, SACP, etc).

This share is near it's all-time high which was about R490. They are not expanding into Africa like the Big 4 has done, so how can they sustain growth in the future?

I mean if they believe that simply pouching customers from other banks will grow their base, I doubt it will continue in big numbers in the short term.

Shares / Who Pays Dividends on JSE?
« on: August 29, 2015, 04:41:51 am »
I'm a novice to buying equities. One thing I do know is some companies pay dividends and others do not. So where do I find a list of companies who pay dividends, especially one that shows the percentage of the share price e.g. dividends per share?

Thanks in advance.
