If so what is your long term thinking

Shares / BEST ETF/S for second half of 2016
« on: May 12, 2016, 02:10:46 pm »
I made some decisions on the beginning of 2016 to go into 10-12 shares off the EE platform

It has not been great and I am learning that picking shares is something at least for myself I am probably going to steer clear of ( in SA at least )

I already have a separate TFSA in which I have DBXWD and BBET40/STXIND ( don't ask me why i split those! )

I have fully subscribed to the TFSA so for extra I am thinking of just going long term into one or a few ETFs and trying to forget about it!

Does anyone have any views on the below?

DIVTRX

NewFunds Momentum Equity ETF

STRX RESI

BBET40 ( or the new name its just changed into )

Looking for something that is well spread and covers a sector that is relatively set to perform at eats over the next few months

Wishful thinking ?    :wtf:

Shares / SELL PROPERTY OR AIRBNB
« on: April 13, 2016, 01:30:01 pm »
Hey All

Hoping to get some opinions on this

I am based out of SA but have a small property in Cape Town CBD, purchased 10 years ago ( Still paying off! ) but at the time it was a no go area and now in Bree street its possibly one of the most sought after city addresses

I am looking at selling to realize the profit as its a key time

Option 1 :

Sell take money, invest .. easy more liquid and easier to protect against a weaker currency etc.. with along term view of buying a bigger home to live in later when returning to SA

Option 2 : short term let on AIRBNB , from research i should be able to get around 3 x the bank repayments, invest the excess money and keep property

Option 3 : pay off the loan and AIRBNB the property so take the full amount as a dividend and invest

Anybody have experience in this ? or a few opinions :)

Shares / BNPUSA tracking better than DBXUS
« on: February 03, 2016, 02:52:27 pm »
I was looking at the difference between DBXUS and BNPUSA and it seems BNPUSA has outperformed the DBX US tracker buy a few % over the last year... also if you look shorter term over this past rough patch its seems to have tracked way better

Anyone know why?

Shares / SATRIXINDI VS. CORONATION INDUSTRIAL FUND
« on: February 02, 2016, 04:20:17 pm »
Hey All

Quick question to get some opinions

Looking for a reasonable fund to get a long term tax free saving account going

One option : SATRIX INDI --> low cost , strong track record but worried about heavy Naspers rating

second option : Coronation Industrial fund... not a bad performer and over the next tricky market period it might be beneficial having active management?

Anyone have any opinions on these?

As always much appreciated!

Shares / LOOKING TO LEARN TO TRADE
« on: January 28, 2016, 11:53:44 am »
HI ALL

I am sure this topic must have been raised a hundred times so please feel free direct to any open links

After about ten years of  building a portfolio through numerous financial service providers, i split it and I started my own around two years ago with the EE platform here in SA and via my EU based bank for international purchases where I am currently based and working in Amsterdam

Its been fun ( stressful but fun! ) and while my mandate is to reach long term growth, the business mind in me really lives the aspect of shorter term trading for profit

I am returning to SA later this year and while I have a few online business plans to get stuck into ,however I wouldn't mind learning to actively trade on the side to start as this really is what I think about 24/7

My question is ... WHERE TO START??

is there any intro courses one can go on? ( I tend to prefer this than searching online for advice as this can get murky )

Also what platform is best to use  ( GT247?? )

Lastly I would love to learn to chart and get into financial analysis .... where is the best place to learn??

Would be great if there was some kind of training one could enroll into

I have always had great feedback from this forum and hoping for some guidance form the good people who reside in this digital portal

Shares / TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE WEAK RAND ?
« on: January 08, 2016, 11:00:42 am »
Hi All

Mid last year I was late to the party but heeded the call and transferred around 50% of my SA investments to the EU where I am temporarily based for work.

Wasn't so hard but still enough red tape to do so!

I invested 30% in a balanced type fund over here in the Netherlands ( hasn't really gone anywhere in 8 months but hasn't lost anything either )

The rest I bought some of the standard US stocks

Facebook
Netflix
Boeing
Constellation
Visa
Starbucks
Nike
VOO ( as my ETF component )
Ishares Health

( To date this selection is down about 2% due to the bloodbath over the past few days )

today ZAR is at 17.4 to EURO

My question is it worth taking some funds back into SA as when i transferred out I got it at 15.2. This would give me a nice win I think

I do not want to live out here always and plan to settle back in SA, however My intention was to build a portfolio here so a little conflicted with this

Appreciate any views!

 :wtf:

Shares / Investment pointers 2015
« on: January 22, 2015, 02:31:27 pm »
Hello to the forum!

I have held a portfolio in Allan grey balanced for around 5 years now and have been adding to it over this time

2012 and 13 did great and I hardly worried however I noticed for 2014 especially toward the end of the year I lost and my yearly growth was pretty low.

I work abroad in the Netherlands so not always easy to go visit an adviser plus want to keep costs to a minimum! Something, maybe intuition is pushing me to re-look this investment stratergy and perhaps look at some other options especially in the year ahead which might be a tough one in SA.

Can any one give some pointers on

A) investing on this side instead in a balanced type retail offering and taking money out AG SA to do so ?

B) rather diversify out of AG balanced and spread across some other funds ( Bonds, Equity, Balanced ) perhaps in other investment houses ( Satrix, coronation )

C) sit tight and hold on AG balanced is a decent place just carry on saving

I know investment advice is taboo, but to be honest out here it super difficult to get anybody to bounce ideas off

Hope i am in the right place!!
