@Hamster

Reading some old threads

You still going for STXIND / DBXWD / PPXTEN

50 30 10

or something like that ?

.............

If you use the easy equities platform.. do you get a platform charge on top of the actual ETF charge?  doesn't that add up ?

Not to throw a spanner in the works but has anyone looked at Coronation TFSA

Coronation Global Strategic USD Income [ZAR] Feeder ( this seems to have done well and pretty conservative for a perhaps shaky global market ? )

Coronation Strategic Income Fund  ( stable and gives solid yield )

Coronation Industrial ( roughly the same performance as STXIND )

Pros: at ;east in tricky times these can be navigated a bit vs. ETF's

Cons: A little more in costs although not much to be honest... + if you listen to SYGNIA CEO ETF's carry a bunch of hidden costs ... so

@Patrick

I was under the impression all dividend tax is exempt in a TFSA ?

Here:
Quote
Deutsche Bank’s response to my question on how dividend withholding tax worked on its range of blue-chip exchange-traded funds (ETFs) was: "Section 64 (n) of the Income Tax Act provides for a rebate to be deducted from the local dividends tax payable in respect of a foreign dividend if that dividend was subject to foreign tax."[

As far as I understand that, it means the dividend taxes are already deducted in the US or wherever, so you do not get as much tax savings from holding them in a TFSA as you would by escaping the full 15% tax on dividends from local companies.

Aside from the tax issues, the MSCI World tracker is not particularly attractive from a dividend perspective since its dividend yield is only about 1.7%, placing it fairly low when ranking ETFs by their dividend or interest payouts./quote]

Really interesting ! thanks for passing that on

I already sit with savings in the S&P 500 index plus some blue chips in an offshore portfolio ( dividends are taxed here as well i think ? )   however with this TFSA I am not sure if I want to go all SA at this point in time

oh well back to the drawing board ...  only a dozen or days to go before d day :)

Still think DBXWD + STXIND or a third thrown in for some stability is not a bad offering. I am however looking at this for the real long term

Why ignore  STXIND ??

That my main question... unless you feel Naspers is on shaky footing

It has 5 years of solid growth, SAB will move out soon and those top 15 will move up

I am of the opinion ( could be so wrong! ) that with Naspers you pretty much own ten cent and get all the other business in SA as an extra... its pretty good value

..............

My thoughts on BBET40, if you had to remove NASPERS, SAB and BAT out of the TOP40 in 2015 you would have had a shocking negative year... these stocks drove the year, why would i want to minimize my holding on them and go all equal in stock s that are clearly struggling in a no growth weak SA economy ?

for sure

basically if all shit breaks loose in stock it rises as a safe haven

So yesterday due to a number of reasons ( Oil, Fed comments etc.. ) shares took a major knock in confidence and the price spiked

Tricky part here is despite how easy it may seem to predict a volatile stock day .. one never knows, and if one is to go by track record Gold generally drops when equities right themselves .. and so far this year we have been knocked , so theoretically unless you believe its a total meltdown we in for a re balance ( I HOPE! )

Have you seen this ETF from ABSA ?  You invest directly in gold as it tracks the Rand price of gold..  its interesting and while wont give the shoot the lights put of Harmony recently for example but maybe something more core if you looking for an easy way into gold

I bought some the other day.. had one day of good growth another of loss and freaked out and sold them ........ next day it went up double digit  :wall:

IMHO so hard to see this long term, trading it however has made cash for some

I am in the same boat and setting mine up for long term

STXIND - I am not sure of this will continue to be a winner but I like that is has a reliable perf history /30%

BBET40 - really because of Simon :)  and also as this can play against STXIND with its heavy Naspers weighting / 15%

PTXTEN - Long term slow burner, good dividend, property core holding in equal weighting /15%

DBXWD - The international play with a view of taking all currencies as I am a little worried on US economy only / 40%

Appreciate any feedback you guys might have, feel like this past year I have been jumping around and really want to get something solid , lock it in and forget about it!

Just thought I would add my 2 cents. DBXUS does pay dividends but it is barely anything. I would still rather invest in that than in anything related to debt. Don't like debt. Won't invest in an ETN just on principle.

@Fawkes .. am i missing something ? Why would BNPUSA be investing in debt ?? I thought it was similar to any US index track but simply a smart beta with some tweaking ?

And if one had easy access would you just rather go direct into VOO ? I only like the ZAR based etf/n's as you get the currency benefit but your cash is here so if things swing its easier to pull out

DBXUS pays dividends. BNPUSA does not. Also, the latter you will have to buy off market as it is not liquid at all.
'

@Orca

Thanks! that is very interesting .... is the result on Bloomberg/morningstar including dividends for DBXUS ? i was sure they included dividend

Could you explain off market? and the liquid comment?

actually did some research and the BNPUSA is a smart ETN, so there is some tweaking while the DBX vehicles are just plain index trackers

Apparently not around long enough to really prove a benefit as they still pretty new to market but if I look at the last year result plus over the past 3 months especially looks like it weathered far better

Interesting!

Thanks Nivek

Explains a lot, worrying to hear that if the bank backing this gets a downgrade you will see an unrelated downturn... good to keep an eye on BNP then!

This made me think then of any SA ETN's which are backed by SA banks ( ABSA? ) a downgrade could be a bit negative!

Something to factor in I guess!

I was looking at the difference between DBXUS and BNPUSA and it seems BNPUSA has outperformed the DBX US tracker buy a few % over the last year... also if you look shorter term over this past rough patch its seems to have tracked way better

Anyone know why?

@Hamster

thats exactly what I was thinking, thanks :)

Have always been in Coronation indi and its done well ... from a cost point of view and also to be on one TFSA was thinking of changing to STXIND , and putting 40% into DBXWD
