Look at Discovery or Bonitas

@Mr Dividend

Interesting! i have always thought of this and told myself I should just put the same amount of money into a good defensive investment and use this to pay for any medical emergencies

I also find in the past in SA when you pay cash you get better service

Only problem is if something serious happens before you have build enough enough reserves

Maybe a basic hospital plan and a separate fund for day to day emergencies ?

So good to hear

I am in the same boat, heading back to SA in November after 6 years in Europe

nice thread, not JSE related but still important financial topic!

So I will be heading back to SA next year which means no more national health insurance for me. Since there are so many private health insurance companies back home, and I do not even know where to start, I thought I would reach out to you guys.

Which company are you with? Are you happy with them? Which company would you recommend?

*I know this is not really JSE related so sorry about that*

OK thanks , thats a massive help!

So definitely keep the investment going at least there years and thereafter i anything sold you will only be liable for CGT ( 11% ? )

Thats easy as I dont really envision using the money for anything as this is a Long term holding

With dividends you 100% correct , I remember having to sign something saying i wasn't a US resident so hopefully on the lower dividend tax rate!

I dont have a broker at all and doing it all DIY, only have a invest platform from a local bank here so will connect with them and see if i can get tax except in some way

You been a great help! thanks!

YOu still enjoying portugal ? I would definitely move out there as love it and spend a bit of time there whenever I need the sun however I am still working and without the language its not easy !

Hi Orca

You are a wealth of knowledge in this area !
A few questions if you don't mind

So any sales of stocks must pay CGT in SA within three years

What do you mean gains before that?

If you are in Portugal , do you pay CGT pm investments ?

Is there a benefit to having an SA broker ?  I am just trying to find the best way to position my portfolio on returning to SA

Is it worth talking to an FA ? Most I have spoken to have no idea of offshore inveatmenta and ones here no idea on SA !

Appreciate any further feedback !

so you would need to declare this in an SA tax return ?  this is what I was a little unsure of ,

I guess my long term worry is the SA CGT when selling anything, would that be applicable ?

@Orca, yes I pay a withholding tax on dividend. Is there any reason to transfer the portfolio to a SA broker? why not just continue with Euro bank ?
In Netherlands if you are brought in by a company which was nike in my case and they pay you over a certain amount you get a 30% tax ruling which is a less heavy tax rate with substantial benefits, one of these being all held investments are tax free, very sad to leave that!

@JaDeb ,excited too ... so funny though when you tell other people that like WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT???  cannot wait to touch home soil and see a couple smiles. and give me a proper summer damit!

« on: August 29, 2016, 05:27:38 pm »
I have been living in The Netherlands for the past 4 years and whilst here set up an account with a local bank and built a share portfolio on a Netherlands bank platform accesing US stocks + ETFs

I hold dual citizenship ( UK and SA )  and currently am on a tax ruling in The Netherlands which exempts me from paying tax on gain and dividend earned

The kicker  ;D

I am planning to move back to South Africa ( apart from the general consensus, I am pretty positive on the future on SA and despite what anyone says, there is no place like Home! )

I really enjoy this platform and would like to continue transacting through it when back in SA

My question is what tax implications exist with this setup? Both in The Netherlands and back home in SA

Considering the UK Passport ... does anyone have any idea on this topic  :wtf:

Shares / GOLD SHARES more specifically ANGLO GOLD ASHANTI??
« on: August 16, 2016, 01:31:35 pm »
So ANG reported recently and from my basic layman understanding it all looked rather positive ? They even set to possibly resume paying a dividend early 2017. Yes there was some concern on Obuasi gold mine with illegal miners but overall really positive

why then is the stock taking a massive pounding over the past two days   :wtf:

Would love it if someone could help me understand that one!

Never a fan of Gold shares to be honest from what I have heard... but this was part of a momentum play in my portfolio for this year and was the only stick to be honest that was smashing it ... until now!

I get the exchange play with stronger rand however this is directly linked to the report recently which looked positive!?

definitely food for thought!!!

I would like to take this stand but I am afraid if I do I would have to give all my other stock picks the same scrutiny and I am sure many more ghosts in the closet

Tobacco stocks have been among the best performers of any stocks, but I personally would not, for the same reason that a very well known UK fund manager, Nick Train, would not:

‘It’s not a moral objection on my part, but it feels like not a smart thing to do — to be a partner in a business that kills its own customers.’

We are probably both wrong and they will continue to grind out both profit and dividends, but it is something to think about. 8)

@Moonraker

damn!

thats a great reward for 8 years :)

Thanks for the H or N clip

Yeah Rand to Sterling is another discussion for sure .... but long term I think that will all play out

Appreciate it

I would hold. Have them since early 2009 (212% capital gain EXCL. dividends). Will continue to be a great dividend payer.

Should benefit from weaker £ on LSE when next results published. See current rates vs. constant rates. (The R/£ exchange rate is another story)

« on: August 08, 2016, 10:56:55 am »
so BTI has been the darling of my SA portfolio for some years

I have always told myself I would keep an eye on it though as personally i feel because of legislation and some other key factors , the movement ahead might be choppy... also Brexit smashed it a bit

The last 3 months though

 :wtf:

Is anyone holding on and thinking this is a buy opportunity to stock up ?

Shares / Re: DOES ANYONE HAVE A BOND ETF IN TFSA ?
« on: August 02, 2016, 11:38:16 am »
yeah, sure in Long term this will probably ring true, I was just interested if anyone saw bonds as a decent building block, look at it as something to smooth out your total portfolio

For example your dividend paying ETF runs through a tough time for Q3 and Q4 however bonds being a safe haven for volatility surge ahead, so instead of having all your cash in one vehicle you balance it a bit with the vision of year on year having a more balanced approach?

A kind of anti equity hedge that is not as volatile as gold :)

I like the call out of @Moonraker saying just keep in cash getting 6-7% ... my problem with that is I will use that cash! i cant keep cash as am always scanning possible buys  :P

Surely you get better yield with a dividend equity than bonds?

For some reason I have been looking at putting a small 10% element of bonds into my TFSA

Looking at Ashburton Inflations ETF or Newfunds Govi

Anyone have any opinions on those two or on including bonds into TFSA as a solid building block ?
Well, if you think bond yields will go down further from where they are now over the next year or so, then by all means as you will get capital appreciation.
On the other hand should you think yields will rise, you will have capital depreciation but due to reinvestment of interest this will to some small extent be smoothed out.

If you see the bond yields hitting the lows of 2013 you will be rather pleased.

South Africa Government Bond 10Y decreased 0.095 percent or 1.09% to 8.65 on Friday July 29 from 8.75 in the previous trading session. South Africa Government Bond 10Y changed -1.59% during the last week, -1.14% during the last month and +4.85% during the last year. Historically, the South Africa Government Bond 10Y reached an all time high of 20.69 in August of 1998 and a record low of 5.77 in May of 2013.

Thanks for this,

If you look at attached results YTD in NFGOVI, pretty good versus average returns in other TFSA vehicles

A lot of people advise using as a building block in a portfolio, I know the vanguard total bond I have a small position in international portfolio works well when stocks go down or sideways... I guess a safe haven and a bit like gold without the volatility ?

I know its terrible to look at past performance, however , i do feel case for raising interest rates has lost some ground over the remaining year and with outside money looking for yield this might not be such a bad idea?

« on: July 12, 2016, 10:18:46 am »
been thinking of this one for some time

Does anyone have any opinions here? Its seems once again DBXUS has been the better performer

Has anyone switched out from WD to US?

If so what is your long term thinking
