If you are, make sure you use a separate account from your investment as your tax will become a nightmare like mine.
Orca - it only becomes a tax issue if you sell within 3 years, what I do is use the funds to get into the market and then pay down my bond and o/d from my pension, LA, and interest on my FD

I use spare funds within my bond and also within my overdraft to purchase shares from time to time. I do this primarily to top up on shares which have taken a hammering and yet their fundamentals are sound - like Woolworth's, Barlows, BHP Billiton and others

Well jaDEB my only suggestion to you is buy more of these shares when your next R 100,000 becomes available in just over a weeks time - averaging seems to be the only way out of your hole (no pun intended) :o

I must say I feel a little uneasy with CML at these levels (yup I hold a few thousand) especially in the light of the fact that they have recently changed their top dog Nelson. His 2ic took over the helm and seems a very capable person and has stated that he is not going to change anything dramatically. The latest results could be window dressing in the sense that they are trying to portray that the business is just as good as before the changes. My concern is that maybe that the next set of results may not be as robust and if they are not then CML could take a very big hit as shareholders take profits and sit on the sidelines. Anyway just my opinion and a small concern that I have around these shares even though I am showing a 139% increase in current price versus costs

I see the Top 40 closed at 36322.20 which is still a way off their all time high of 36515.31 achieved on 11/02/2013 and that the All Share closed at 41014.98 which is just below what I have as an all time high of 41047.72 per 14/03/2013 so our markets are pumping.

I think some people took profits today and they will come back into the market just before LDT to buy up more shares and then reap the dividend

This competition is far more like a proper investment building program to improve ones nett worth. And of course anyone can enter and they can make rash decisions or informed decisions. If you want to play in the penny stocks market then one can without losing money, but if you get it wrong you can certainly see what the consequence of your decisions are. From an investment point of view it allows you to determine fairly accurately the value of your share selection based on whatever research you undertook and if you were horribly wrong it doesn't hurt you financially as it would if you had sunk your own funds into the shares. So to me it is a learning tool without getting your fingers burnt

I too have had bitter experiences with RA's, particularly when you come to extending its maturity date, the costs are horrendous. My Old Mutual RA gave me a 5.5% internal rate of return over some 22 years which was ludicrous. I cashed out and moved my funds into a Coronation Top 20 Fund - even with my minimum drawings of 2.5% quarterly ( +/- R 2000 per quarter) the fund has grown by over R 35,000 in 16 months.
I think it is important that you look at your debt and what interest rate you are paying - I for example have a better interest rate on my overdraft than on my bond so when I want to buy shares I fund it across my overdraft in preference to my bond account. Also keeping money on a money market account gives you such a poor return, maybe what you need to look at is how often you dip into your MM account and if you can take a large percentage out of the account and invest in say a 6 month FD. Current interest a rates are about 5% but if you have a parent over 60 get them to invest for you as you could get  1/2 % extra or take it to Capitec for a better interest rate. Personally I would never use an investment advisor unless you can find one over 55 who has experienced some financial difficulties in live and I don't mean debt, but experience in turbulent markets etc

I must say that I am rather pleased with my 111% gain the past 12 months of which the first 6 months was only 30%.

What did you do that was different to me with regard holding CML shares I bought 1500 on 5th June 2012 and I am showing a price increase of 132.1% to date and similarly with Woolies its showing a 127.8% price increase - certainly my best performing counters

yip..... and in the past 6 months, only R130k of their shares have been traded - 6MONTHS!

I have an order on to sell some of my Cashbuild shares and the price asking is R 135 (currently R 122.80) but during the auction someone purchased 2 of my offered shares - why I don't know but whoever it was made my sale hugely expensive as I got R 270 but incurred R 92.70 as a minimum brokerage charge. So yes there are some very stupid operators out in the market, who don't look at the all in costs before doing a deal

Marc Ashton has taken a different view on this report and his article is on Fin 24 - I would be more inclined to believe Marc's figures and arguments over AMPS figures as they seem to be looking at a very thin slice of data

I would think that if the Reserve Bank does cut interest rates at the next Monetary Policy meeting that a substantial portion of funds which could have gone to bonds and fixed investments with banks will go to fund managers and other investors directly into the stock market. So I think we will continue to see the overall indices ticking up and then pulling back for a breather and then carrying on. Buffet is reported seeing the Dow getting to 16,000 to 17,000 by year end - that still significant growth to come
