In my book, all those above the STXIND are winners and beating most Fund Managers.   :TU:

Not talking about the 1c and 2c Penny stock holders.  :frustrated:
Seems like you have been at the juice somewhat earlier than normal - would you have made this statement a week or two ago when your portfolio was below the index - don't think so.
If you want to be controversial then lay it on the line but be consistent >:D

The selling part would simulate more real time investing/trading.
I am getting hammered to the bottom by Ellie's  :'( :'(
Ellies are taking strain because the government are taking too long to sanction the set top boxes for digital TV - they keep pushing out the conversion date

Orca - empathy mate.
I too hate SARS they are incompetent and spiteful and you can't discuss anything technical with them as they hide behind the Act wherever they can

Vodacom and MTN led the declines in the blue-chip top 40 index in early trade on Monday, with Vodacom tumbling more than 5% and MTN dropping more than 3% after the industry regulator’s decision to lower mobile terminate rates.

The Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa) said on Friday it would lower the mobile termination rate to 10c by 2016, from 40c currently.

The termination rate is a fee that mobile operators pay each other to carry each others’ calls
Was a great opportunity to buy Vodacom - I bought yesterday at just under R 113 and will sit with them for the next few years. I think the market over reacted to the announcement by Icasa and also the charge is supposed to be reduced over a 3 year period. Should be an interesting trip from hereonin

Got about a year left or perhaps less to zero the primary residence bond. Reduced the monthly installments from 12k to 3k p/m over the last 3 years. Sitting on the sidelines watching the market is frustrating as hell! Cashed all previous STX investments in to move to bond and have made considerable lifestyle adjustments to throw plus minus 75-80% of nett income at it. Have no short term debt either.

Also got 2 bonded rental properties which I can start attacking a year later 1 by 1. This approach would guarantee passive income for life from the end of year 2 and 3, then start chucking all earned surpluses at STXIND,FINI,RAFI,RESI etc. to build up to my 8mil magic mark OR I'm leaning towards chucking the surplus at STXIND instead as soon as the primary residence bond is zeroed for that 8mil mark.

Keen to hear who's done this or also doing aiming for and what your experiences have been.
It's all well and good have an end goal of R 8 bar but the reality is how are you going to achieve this - what is your time horizon and once that is settled then set shorter term milestones to achieve that ultimate goal. You also need to quantify what you consider your base figure is and then align this with your ultimate goal and then determine how much you would need to invest monthly and also what can you realistically expect as an annual return on your investments. Without plotting and measuring your achievements you will more than likely not achieve your goal. There are advocates for reducing bonds as quickly as possible to reduce debt, but bonds can also be useful to invest in the markets and gain returns which could outstrip the cost of servicing your bond - so do some sums and then decide which is the most advantageous path to follow

Yes I do, 3.

4 if you add ARQ.

(Wouldn't think so if you look at the leader board. Seems guys with 1 or 2 picks doing much better - so much for 'eggs in one basket theory' :( )
I agree with you moon on the value of eggs in one basket such as in this competition, but the real danger comes in when that sector in which you hold all your eggs falls out of favour then you can be punished quite severely. If participants had bought into gold or platinum early in this competition then they would be taking quite a lot of pain now - I know because one of my pains is Goldfields and this is more so in my real portfolio. So I still believe in have a spread portfolio - one could I suppose use the same arguments around penny stocks and solid top 20 stocks - has a lot to do in the short term with the roll of the dice

Patrick - when buying shares on this challenge it is absolutely vital that participants watch the share price on another forum (I use my brokers live feed) and when the price drops they wait for your system to drop the price which seems to be 10 minutes later (but not always) Then the participants can climb in at the lower price for a similar period of time. Doesn't help to just use the price shown on your system unless it is to the participants advantage, but you do need another source of price monitoring O:-)

Cannons track record is rather bad, they the last asset managers I would take advice or tips from...
H - go to Moneyweb and click on Unit Trust lookup and put in PNC and see how many unit trusts hold PNC in their portfolios

Was at a JSE presentation last night and the speaker was Cannon Asset Management and they have invested quite heavily into Pinnacle, OneLogix, Zeder, Sasfin, Old Mutual/Nedbank. So those holding Pinnacle don't fret

I am having a bit of a bun fight with Nedgroup Investments as the two funds that I am invested in are both managed funds and they charge a 1.73% TER. They have provided me with returns for the year ending 2010,2011, and 2012 and they seem to have produced return which I consider somewhat ordinary. Can anyone on the forum provide me with the above Satrix performances over the same periods as mentioned.
Any input would be appreciated :'(

So what prompted SARS to do an audit on your shares. If one follows the e filing form what they ask for is the base figure and the selling price of stock and then CGT is calculated on the difference, less of course any carried forwards losses
