I foresee prices in RSA increasing to the detriment of the consumer, Davis is definitely not in touch with what is going on in the country. He needs to ask himself how come the SA Poultry industry don't export any chicken products into the world market. It all revolves around the brine content of SA chickens - whereas we add up to 35% by mass of brine the imports are all less than 15% with many of the European countries outlawing brine additives

The old adage sell in May and go away never tells you when to come back into the market. But I recall (on another forum) someone doing an exercise on our particular market and it seems to perform best between September and February. However we have experienced some significant drops in exchanges world wide in September and even October. So unless someone can produce data that shows how each month in the year has performed over the life cycle of the JSE and looking at high, mean and low per month I don't think we will be any the wiser. So maybe buy into a share over an extended period so that you can buy on dips

Just got back from SARS. My tax loss from the 2008/9 crash amounts to -R284k but they say it has prescribed so the loss will not carry over.
Any tax loss or money due older than 3 years is prescribed but money owed by you never prescribes.
This will now cost me plenty. The auditors will get back to me within 3 weeks.

Got sorted with the Request for Correction. I had already clicked on it so it stayed open although I could not see it.
Orca - since you were unaware of the fact that they were treating you as a trader I believe they should waive the prescription period - I would approach their appeals board to get them to apply leniency. The reality is they can't hide behind the Act when it suites them and then chose to ignore under different circumstances

Orca - if you are having to recompile your tax returns and SARS are seeing your transactions as a "trader" rather than an "investor" and thus have to declare your gains as revenue, then surely you can recompile on the basis of lumping these funds together with any other revenue but then you are allowed to make deductions for office space, telephones, cost of operation i.e. normal tax deductible expenses. Also through the latter part od 2007 and into 2008 did you not suffer any losses on sale of shares which would be considered business losses and could also reduce revenue so that you don't end up paying your life's investments to a rather dubious crowd of people

Can't get my head around this gold adornment thing but was suitably impressed when looking at the depictions of karma sutra and couldn't help but notice all the gold jewelry adornments - so it seems that you can't have the one without the other. Does somehow make a mockery of the adage all that glitters is not gold

Maybe we should alter the name of this thread to "The investor is challenged" what with people talking to physiatrists, bone throwers and all manner of sangoma's  ;D

Well I see Moody's downgraded Sanral which puts pressure on all SUI's so the country rating could be seriously affected. This is when the government and the citizens realize that Pravin is not a magician but just an ordinary alchemist :LHST:

Given the time of your post and your enjoyment of sundowners I am amazed that the only voice you heard was your daughter's :LHST:

If you are with a broker they may have a fact sheet which you can access which lists nature of business directors, trade names shares in issue highest and lowest price (normally 12 months) and dividends declared to date - check with your broker how you can access this fact sheet for the info you are looking for

Thanks Franz. I suppose that will be the best option. I see on the Satrix website that they have decreased the fees to 0.35%pa on the low scale and 0.65% for over R1M. Not bad at all.
Orca - why would they have a higher fee for sums over 1 bar seems ridiculous :wall:

Postings relative to CML seem to have a euphoria about it - but sometimes it seems more like a pi$$ing competition. Can't imagine what the posts would be like if someone got in early on say Capitec or Woolies or Shoprite. Come on people CML is not extraordinary - just a share that has done well

Well Orca - you paid your school fees for maybe your impulsive behavior with shares in the earlier days. The sad part of it is that your opportunity cost is massive even though 320% is not to be sniffed at - I am sure there are many fund managers who would like these types of returns. I get the sharenet daily report and I get my own brokers recommendation on shares which have recently published results ad I must say that the analysts are a fickle bunch when they recommend sales of particular counters, only to recommend 3 - 6 months later that they are a buy - point in mind - my brokers have recommended a continuance of a sell on Massmart  :wtf:  its all time high was R 205.04 and is currently trading around R 153 - so to my mind a good time to get in and buy, after all we are supposedly longer term investors. Similar views were expressed by Woolies some 2 years ago and they have advanced quite nicely. So sometimes it pays to be patient and just pick up good companies when others are selling

MFL - is I believe a well run company (had many dealings with them when I still had a day job) and they seem to be able to reinvent themselves and stay abreast of current document handling matters. I have frequently considered investing in them but have baulked at the last moment - maybe because it's not a company that will shoot the lights out, but is more a slow but consistent growth company. My biggest concern is that with so many ways in which to store documents and it being legally acceptable to reproduce from source one wonders whether there is a need to keep documents at a remote site with another vendor. From a banking perspective it was a pain to hold certain documents for 25 years in an archives environment, but with the advent of microfilming and then scanning it became easier to store fiche or a disc away from your IT operation. So in the longer term I am not sure whether keeping documentational images with MFL is as cost effective as it was say 5 to 10 years ago. I am sure that the company will disagree with me, and would probably be able to prove that it can be cost effective, but in my little world that is the main reason why I have not bought into the company
Purely my opinion
