There are a few other shares that have done very well:-
AVI - I bought at R 34.58 and currently R 76.84
CLS - I bought at R 47.12 and currently R 78.60
WHL - I bought at R 43.07 and currently R 81.78
PYN - I bought at R .67 cents and currently R 2.80 - no longer hold as many as I did when I originally bought reduced my holding from about 30,000 to present 8,100
I must say that I tended to follow a particular strategy when buying the above shares (and a number of others in my portfolio) and that was that those companies who got their business model wrong at some stage Woolworths, Barlows and now Truworths and were hammered by the market, then I bought (no thanks to Buffett) as fundamentally I believed the companies were big enough to re invent themselves and do well, so haven't been disappointed as yet other than with Cashbuild - but here I will be patient

This is not a boast but merely an indication of the volatility of the market and how quickly it can change. Using my personal portfolio and a base value at 27th October by close of business yesterday the paper value of my portfolio has grown by just over R 179,000. The ALSI hasn't hit an all time in fact it is still off its high by about 1,800 points, yet my portfolio is at an all time high. So sometimes it pays to sit and wait out corrections rather than sell into a falling market

If your motivation to move is purely costs - then maybe what you should be doing is engaging with your current brokers advising them that you are looking to move, but, will remain if they are prepared to pare their charges and fees. It will be dependent on the size of your portfolio and frequency of buying/selling
There is always wiggle room in charges/fees except the statutory fees relative to buying/selling securities

jaDEB = Buying high when greed sets in and selling low when fear develops is a common theme in investing
Not true of the real investor - more a result of someone not knowing the market comprehensively enough

There was an old thread, dealing with this dating back to 2013, decided to make a new one.

Currently my Portfolio (Beginner / Not even novice)

STXIND    33.3%
STXFIn     33.3%
DBX USA  33.3%

Hoping to add some blue chips in the next 6 months.

Not much of a gambler, don't have the stomach for it, so mostly go for stable, also still have some time left, retirement only in about 25y.

Post yours and comment on mine if you like. :TU:
Not sure of your motivation for starting this thread is to get an inkling into what other people have in their portfolios. You may also find that many who have listed their portfolios in 2013 may still be holding a very similar portfolio as to remain classified by SARS as an investor you need to hold your position for 3 years at least.
Also objectives of investors on this forum may have different objectives as to why they are investing and then there are others who are quite happy to speculate on the market as traders
You don't mention how much you have invested in each of the ETF - so given that you retire in about 25 years time is it an objective that these investments are your pension or are they funds to augment your pension.
Maybe you need to re examine your present pension funding, determine if there is any scope to increase contributions (if required) and consider the fee structure, also if the company you work for has its own managed fund it could well be cheaper than an external pension fund. Ideally you want to retire on at least 70% to 80% of your last salary which would (based on current financial calculations) require that you contribute 22% of gross to your pension fund
Just some of my thoughts on your post

Didn't see the lows today but on 31 December 2013 the Alsi was 46290.20 and the Top40 was 41517.34 so we have had quite a substantial retracement from the highs of 29/07/2014 when the Alsi was 52310.70 and the Top40 was 47115.55. Seems like foreign investors are looking for greener pastures. Sunday Times normally reports outflows on bonds and equities think it could have been quite horrific this week

So as the Alsi stands at the moment 47222.28 it is almost exactly as its index level of January 23rd (47241.09) - so I would see this drop off as a sizeable correction

Hi Patrick - when will you be addressing this matter - looking at my personal portfolio they allocated my NPL and debited me 26/09/2014 for the shares as I exercised my option to take up the shares. In this "game" I too wish to take up my letters - my investor challenge account can be debited - Thanks

Hi Graham, just to make sure I understood the sens. It's 22 new shares for every 100 held on the 12 September, at a cost of R59.50 per share. Correct?

Quite correct Patrick

Thanks for sorting this out Patrick 8)

This is where SARS are absolutely stupid - if you haven't held shares for 3 years you could get yourself into some trouble if you sell down your holdings to protect your capital. Clearly they are only after the tax and don't give a hoot as to whether you protect your capital against a significant market correction

Great, I'll find the sens. Generally with rights issues, we force all holders to take them here, even if it puts their cash into a negative. I think the same should be done in this situation.

Personally I would sit on the side lines for the next few days to a week and then buy on dips - if you have spare cash. Sometime in mid October our new finance minister is going to tell us how bad the financial system is in RSA and how much the state has borrowed and also how it is going to avoid a sovereign downgrade - this unfortunately will happen and the Rand will weaken once again - why we may even see R 11.75 to R 12.00 to the dollar

If you look at the WHL sens it spells out the deal, but, in essence shareholders have been allocated NPL which had to be taken up last Friday or the letters lapsed. I hold WHL in my private portfolio and have taken up my shares as they are priced at a discount to current trading prices (Price is R 60 and some change per share) so once they list these shares they will ranks with the current ordinary shares. One can expect the price of WHL to drop a bit as there will be more shares in circulation but I think it is already in the price as they are trading at about R 71.00
