@gcr, if you transferred those holdings to easy equities, you wouldn't have any minimum fees. That means you could sell a few without huge transaction costs.
And my holdings with them would raise what sort of charges? - currently I enjoy no holding or admin charges with my brokers other than conventional scrip sales/purchase charges

That is a great site. I believe he also does talks at the JSE.

Yup he orchestrates the monthly power hour - get hooked up to the JSE invitation list if you want to attend
One being held this evening

Here's an interesting situation for all those people who really think they are going to make millions from playing with penny stocks.
I took a gamble on Nutrition Holdings (NUT) and over time bought 1.5 million shares all at 1 cent. Today they have traded at 4 cents a share and given my costs to purchase my profit would be R 44,850 if I could sell my entire holdings today. A sizeable profit in any terms, but here's the problem - if I try and unload 1.5 mil. shares in one hit I am either going to end up selling off part sales and incurring brokerage on each closed deal and I may well not get to the point where all sales fall in one day. So to unload such a holding will eat into my profit significantly, there is another danger because those people who watch the density of shares would see a holder of the stock selling a substantial holding and there is every chance this will depress the market to some extent
Anyway I believe this share will still go higher and I have already placed orders to sell at a figure considerably above the current 4 cents, so will just wait and see and if I get my prices I will let the forum know of my eureka moment, but then again it may in the short term swing the other way
So if you play with penny stock write the costs off immediately you purchase them, as you are more likely to lose money on them rather than get great returns :LHST:

This article is all well and good when dealing with a carefree life style, however one of the issues that will bite you in the arse when you get to 55 and want to consider retiring is have you put enough away to meet you continuation of your life style in your retirement years. Today if you are circumspect in your life style you are likely to life as long in retirement as you are likely to have worked. Ensure that you put away at least 18 to 22% of your annual income into some or other pension fund based on your current gross annual income, if you don't you will clearly run out of funds

I still have an absolute belief that there are some people whether they be traders or fund managers who move prices on various counters. The Stock Exchange has an investigative section which should investigate all non normal price and volume movements. Whether they really fulfill this function fully is open to conjecture.
I hold 1.5 mill Nutrition shares which for months have been flipping between 1 cent and 2 cents - a 1 cent move in my case makes a substantial value change as all of my holdings were purchased at 1 cent. Last week the share continued to flip between 1 and 2 cents but the volumes went up significantly. This week the price has flipped between 2 and 3 cents pretty much everyday and volumes are significant presently almost 1.8 million shares have traded today alone, so someone/body is moving the price. There has been no sens out recently to announce some ground shaking event so I suspect insider trading or a BEE deal being put in place. the former is almost impossible to investigate as the onus is on the JSE to prove this, and not the other way around where the company has to defend the price movement or volume increases
Nutrition is pretty much a penny stock but if it gets to 5 or 6 cents I could make a substantial profit if I can unload my holdings, why do I hold them - simple - could make a lot of money if they improve markedly, but it is also a bit of a hedge against CGT for tax puposes

What's happening in the market today and tomorrow is window dressing - end of a quarter for fund managers and they want to show their customers managed portfolios, trump non managed funds. Buy not before Wednesday or Thursday this week with your new allocation of R 100,000 on Wednesday for the competition

My concern is the rate of the Rand's decline against the dollar. With the new levies coming in on April 1, on petrol, and this decline we will be paying more at the fuel pump - which will negate all the benefits we have gained in the oil price - going to be painful in the next 9 months of the year and taxes have gone up. I always thought that one strived for a win - win situation rather than a lose - lose situation

Could that be a measure of improved productivity? :LHST:

Apologies, I want to have prices live to look at buy and sell of a share as below, my previous reply was incorrect. I need to see on a share the 3 buy prices and 3 sell prices.

Share X

Buyer 1000 @ R 40                                Seller 20 @ R42
Buyer 200 @ R38                                   Seller 1500 @ R43
Buyer 80000 @ R32                               Seller 10000 @ R48

I need to see the spread between the buyers and sellers on a specific share.
I am not aware of any broker or even the the JSE providing such a list of information, this is too granular a report as it would change every millisecond. The only way I can think that you could get there is to place these specific shares in a watchlist and then dive into each of the shares from time to time to get this info, many brokers provide this info down to a market depth of 5 but some you can explode to show the days trades to date. My brokers only show the last 10 trades, but before big N green swallowed them up they would show you the days transaction by deal
Hope this helps

@gcr, I noticed that with moneyweb, surely someone in their tech department is feeling the pressure... Btw, I quite like your comments on the articles there.
Patrick - with all due respect to you and your career calling. I have yet to find an IT person who understands the clients needs, nor do they have the capability to implement anything remotely close to the clients needs. When I cobol coding in the 70's our lecturer made the statement " there is nothing a computer can't do, the only limitation is the programmer", I have tended to keep this dear to my heart.
No reflection on you but most programmers lack the knowledge of the business within which they operate.
With both my sons I insisted that they take business administration, accountancy and computer appreciation (both did their MSC first) for their B. Comm degrees - at least they understand business requirements and can argue with the propeller heads when they sink into their jargon state of mind and tell you it can't be done.
There you have it my rant about IT people - but don't feel put out because I have the same views about Architects and QS's

Yes, my actual portfolio is live. But I am looking at following shares live, where it give u live the 3 top buyers and 3 top sellers - prices
Not sure I understand what relationship you are trying to track, there is normally a list of shares with the highest volume transacted over the day, and a similar listing of highest value Rand values.
Are you looking for a list which will show the top 10 shares with the highest activity and the price range within that activity range?

Don't know if any of you access Moneyweb, but, all day they have had an epic fail with the launch of the new web page and its layout. Can't comment on any of their articles, which is a shame as by and far the most interesting section is reading the variety of comments. This whole episode must hurt their business severely

Do you not operate your personal portfolio through a broker - if you do then approach them and find out whether you can get share prices live.
All my prices on my portfolio are live prices no 15 min delays bulls%%t

@Pluto. No, the VAT is only on the fees and not your deposits.

Only SA residents.  :frustrated:

Ja Orca - I agree. Why can't those who emigrated not place their blocked funds into these investments and then after a given time frame arbitrage the funds out of the country :'(

I agree with JDP it is early days, I think there will be rule changes as speed bumps are found along the road, and then excluded.

In my opinion this is a smoke and mirrors product, as many people get a rebate on interest components within the tax structure, and given that you can only invest R 30,000 p.a. the rebate is more than adequate. Also they are capping the lifetime investment at R 500,000 so it will take you + 16 years to get to this amount, which in terms of pensioners is not really a positive at all as some may have less than 16 years to live.
There is to my mind only one positive factor in this investment and that is that there is no CGT, but in reality managing your own share portfolio you will be able to negate this cost through astute investing
