Shares / Re: ABSA's TFSA offering.
« on: July 06, 2015, 10:09:33 pm »
I know it is a TFSA thing but you can still trade your ETF's without gearing. Selling your ETF within the 36 month holding period is after all considered by SARS to be "trading".

Simon Brown from "One Last Lap" is trading his ETF's in a TFSA.
I am not sure if I understand you correctly - you can't trade any instruments within the TFSA there is a defined amount (R30,000) that you can make to the TFSA per annum but you can make more than 1 deposit within the calendar year - monthly payments are acceptable. However once you sell all or part of the R 30,000 in a calendar year you can't top it up in the same calendar year. So trading is not an option with the TFSA, what you are permitted to do is to exit one of the investments and re - enter into another agreed investment with the suite of instruments within the TFSA - I think there were 32 instruments. That's my understanding and the question of CGT is somewhat unclear to me

The more important question is what are you going to do with the proceeds. As alternatives could suggest Mr Price and Cashbuild, AVI, Woolworths and even Clicks as good options

This is the first time I have used their system and must say that I find the completion of screens very unfamiliar and as MP says all over the place. The process of buying shares seems somewhat antiquated and it doesn't show depth of bids and offers, also did not see transaction history.
I don't want to be unkind to Sanlam but being with my brokers I wonder if they ever asked their clients what they would like to see on the screens. However their screens may well be formatted in the way they are because they may be more skewed to assist traders rather than investors, so the layout of their screens does not encourage me to move from my present brokers

13,000 shares at 13 cents instead of about 305/310 sales were as high as 342

The reality is that the I Trade challenge is really for traders and not investors - the period that the competition runs for is far too short. I have entered the competition and once I have bought all my shares, I intend to just sit with them to competition end, not into buying and selling on a consistent basis

I see Ellies is going ahead with its rights issue - you can get some 40 odd shares for every 100 held at a price of R 1.10 - wow that's a bargain given that they are trading at between 88 and 94 cents today. Once the new shares come onto the market it will dilute the overall position and probably take the price down further. Wonder what they know that everybody else doesn't regarding the rights offer price - I can see a huge take up of these shares

Well that's just peachy, I am in R89 991 profit and they are restarting the competition Monday 22 June.  :wtf:
Doesn't say much for their robust checking of their system at all, hopefully this glitch doesn't happen in their real life system.
Without being too critical this competition has been run over a few years - surely they could have sorted these glitches out in their beta testing - must be a bit of a jolt to their reputation
So we start all over again with the market having increased quite a bit this last week and a shortened period to end date of competition - hardly a competition for an investor but more so for a trader

I posted on Warrens article that there is another attribute displayed by wanton early retirees (like me) and that is planning before and after retirement and also taking up a hobby

Play the I Trade challenge, book yourself onto a beginners course with one of the banks to learn about the stock exchange, get hooked up onto one of the Power Hour presentations with Simon Brown - JustoneLap
Some would say read Grahams book - do so if you want to fall asleep after each 10 or so pages - suggest you speed read the book and take out the principles and intuitive bits, but to slog through the book is terrible

Found an interesting site
http://countrymeters.info/en/Greece - you can change to a selection of countries and it deals with population stats
Greece is actually quite a small country in terms of population
Interesting read this site

See "exchange4free" as from April 1, 2015 SA residents may invest R10 million per tax paying adult each year as part of their foreign investment allowance
