the way I understand it, is that you will get Prosus shares that will be listed on the JSE, but are dual listed here with main listing in Amsterdam, so no separate trading account or tax issues
Wasn't this the route that Steinhoff adopted :LHST: :LHST:

It's on my to-do list. The big stumbling block is the low cost offshore bank account. If anyone knows a good way to do that without spending a fortune?

Anyway, I think I've found a way around needing that though, so the blog post is due soon.
Well done - looking forward to the article

Investing in the SA market is not for sissies - so be cautious, and, clear in your thinking and actions
For the sissies like me :D you can also invest in the whole world easily and cheaply from South Africa: https://investorchallenge.co.za/a-newbies-guide-to-investing-on-the-jse/
Patrick the above article is old, but, more importantly it does not set out how a RSA resident can set up a broker account in say London, or New York. How about producing an article covering such options open to RSA citizens without them having to travel overseas to open the account as many want a physical discussion in their home country and they want a local address before they even consider opening a broker account - which may well require opening a banking account to fund the brokering account with steep charges at both entities

Hi Tshepo:-

A couple of pointers - was investing in property one of your goals?. If not why did you invest in property and if you are out of property how long were you in property. Prior to going into property did you research whats happening in the property sphere.
Lastly its all very well to set goals, but the setting of goals have no relevance if you don't commit to dates, timelines, miles stone and measurable.
Before buying into the market do some serious reading and even if permissible talk to Simon or attend some of his workshops/showcases to broaden your knowledge.

I see today Vodacom has issued a whole bucket load of forfeitable shares to a number of "executives" and whats more they have been issued at R 117.3259 per share on 14th June - current price R 125.75 and the lowest price I have for the day is R 125.38 - so how did Vodacom acquire these shares - certainly not on the open market. Seems like the "executives" got their shares at a discount to market prices. My understanding is that if the market doesn't move to the higher side then the "executives" suffer no hardship, also at its present price all these people are in the money.
If I look at the companies histogram on prices they have dropped from R 183.09 July 2017 to current levels - hence my comment the other day that the share is a dog - to my mind the company executives are milking the business and robbing their subscribers

Vodacom is a dog have held shares for in excess of 18 months and have managed to make a profit of R 2,000 on an investment of R 125,000 - would have been better served with a 32 day account with a bank.
Also as a service provider they are very tardy in following explicit instructions and keep sending "special announcement messages" and how much data I have used and can't explain what consumed the data
Pretty ordinary company

XXX - surely the time of holding Bitcoins - i.e. time erosion between buy and sell dates determine whether it is CGT or income. I too believe there are going to be some extraordinary test cases in the not too distant future

Sounds like a winning solution you have there Orca.
Just a pity you had to find this all out only after you moved overseas - would have been beneficial if you had known all of this ahead of relocating.
I would suspect that your "school fees" have been quite substantial

Mr D - why would you not consider a camper. Would not travelling and airbnb not prove more expensive?
With a camper at least you could go where you wanted to go - in search of an ideal location, also once you have finished your travels with the camper you can always sell it. I understand the camping sites are quite well run/maintained not at all like the American Trailer Parks :LHST:

Two pieces of advice:-
Draw up a 12 month budget covering all payable household expenses - I make a tab for each month on an Xcel spreadsheet and populate each month - bring the revision months negative or positive difference into the new month. If you pay annual fees car licence, donation to a charity populate those items in the month that they occur. If you extrapolate your spend and income over the full year period you will get a picture as to which months are going to be tight and which months you may have some flexibility. If you are positive you will get a bonus of some description or income from and investment then plug that in as well. If you have a loan for a car arrange with your bank that you want to introduce capital once or twice a year but it must reduce the capital due but the monthly repayments are kept at the same level - this will result in you paying off the debt x months ahead of the agreement period

Dreaming of being a millionaire is one thing, actually achieving it is another matter - this is nothing more than a project, so take the project management approach which simply put is having a start point and an end point and it needs strict milestones in between - if you miss a milestone then readjust to meet the same project end point. Once you get to 70% of you project journey then start looking at your next goal - which may well be R 2 mill. but ensure that you achieve it in a shorter period than the project to get to R 1 mill. There is no harm in setting long term goals but the real important part is setting milestones, meeting the milestones, or adjusting but still ensuring that you stick to your end date. As a person nearly 30 years your senior I have always worked on goals and meeting deadlines - my next end goal is 2025 but still twice a year I measure my achievements against that goal and determine whether I am on target or not and if not adjustments are made to achieve the end goal

So have fun setting up goals and milestones - also periodically do a reality check on progress made

GCR: "I could caution you on RA's but I think it is probably too late - when I retired at 58 I drew down my RA's rapidly via living annuities and move all away from Old Mutual - where I am getting better returns on the single LA that I have".

Thanks for the suggested approach, GCR. I fully expect a battle, but feel better equipped ;}  Two questions for clarification: was it a deliberate strategy to draw down your RAs rapidly post retirement? Did you move everything away from, or to, OM? I wasn't quite clear on this bit. My reason for asking is I'm weighing up what to do with one of my RAs which matures earlier than the others.
I moved my RA's away from OMSA as their charges were horrendous and they weren't open to negotiations - one was moved to Coronation as a L.A. the other small one I drew down and invested directly into the market
