Thanks I also added Santova as it seems like it has had solid results year after year. Pallinghurst was bought at around R 3 so not too bad in the last year I think now that Platinum is heading up it will do even better with Sedibelo Platinum and their Gemfields and Iron operations now getting good prices.
Just as a matter of interest I sold out of Pallinghurst at R 3.14 - but this was in 2011 thus why I say they have done very little over the years

All my shares are in an nominee account.
In a sense you remain anonymous to the company's on its share register
But this is really I choice I have made as when selling shares you have to get the scrip in good order (45 years ago this was a problem as your customer had to sign a release form to allow the banks to get in good order and surrender the scrip in 14 days (then). So to obviate this problem we used to get the customer to keep the scrip in the Banks nominee account but to the clients order as each had their own nominees scrip account/portfolio

So in my case it is really a carry over from those days
Also today it doesn't matter in real terms how you register your scrip as SARS can access any information on tax payers irrespective of how registered

Small caps in my portfolios.

Rhodes, curro, csg, cil, finbond, santova, adi, Taste, aeei, afrimat, calgro, ascendis, balwin, micromega, rolfes, sygnia, CMH, accelerate, atlanitic leaf, sirus, safari, fairvest, texton, tower, greenbay, IAPF, maradelta, polska, sereit, storage.

I'm a collector, not a investor.... :D
I can't really disagree with your portfolio selection as I also hold some on your list, but what is not evident is what your bankers are/or more precisely what is in your portfolio (not disclosed) relative to larger cap shares.
Many of the shares in your small cap shares are subject very frequent price movements and seem to react to noise in the market. If we get a situation like 2007/8 again then you could be burnt quite severely with these smaller cap shares.
In my experience I limit my portfolio so that small cap shares do not exceed more than 12% of my total portfolio by value so in an advancing market one can then maintain the 12% by buying more in small caps. Also with small caps you have to be patient and maybe wait years before it starts adding value to your wealth. Santova and Taste are particularly true examples for me - both have dropped in price since purchase

Second time now I see people talking about CSG, what exactly do they do?
Their nature of business is stated as "a contract services group offering a wide range of services including staffing solutions, facilities management (nice way of saying running your canteen operations) industrial, mining and related services in Southern Africa to an array of mostly blue - chip clients
If you are on a broker platform punch in the company code and then look at statutory data. From my JSE records there highest price in the last 12 months has be R 1.76 and a low of R .96
Bulelani Ngcuka used to be the Public Protector some years back and he is chairman of this company

Hope that helps

Hamster - can't you use your STXIND as a tax break or are you going to lose more than you are prepared to lose. Most segment counters are cyclic and maybe you need to look at the share prices of a couple of counters and track the cycles which could assist as to when you enter those counters.
Also there is so much noise out in the market - FNB will say that house prices have stagnated and even gone backwards. There was an article recently where it said to build a house costs more (square metre basis) than to buy a house of similar size - strangely that's been the situation for all of 30 years anyway - if you even out the peaks and troughs. I myself have just received notification that my homeowners policy (replacement of my current premises id razed to the ground) is increasing by 11%. Strangely enough this insurance cover has doubled since 2013 so I think everybody is putting in false information into the market.

I hold STXIND but then I have held them for a good number of years so am showing + 40% share price improvement - so maybe you should reconsider selling out - but that's just my opinion.
The market also works in cycles in 2007/2008 my portfolio took a hit of some R800,000 but within 18 months the value was some R 200,000 above its highest point at the time of the crash. Investing in the stock exchange is a long term investment so stick it out

Before you go diving into these shares have a look at their shares prices over the last 3 years and then decide Jubilee I lost interest in as they seemed to be going nowhere, Pallinghurst set up 5/6 years ago when Gilbertson was booted from Billiton and the share has gone nowhere - I think they still deal in precious stones which doesn't seem to excite the market. on your list I would probably only be interested in Calgro as historically they have been a solid company and seem to be well managed

Just my opinions - as to which ones I would select that subjective but for what its worth I hold shares in Rolfes,  Rhodes, Taste - all for longer term growth - 2 - 4 years down the road

Fawkes - I don't wish to burst your bubble but my opinion is that you need to separate the writing from the financial - it just seems to me that the driver is the income you need to derive. I don't think there is an author that has not struggled initially before their books started paying the bills. I am not saying you should ignore the financials, but the real reason you are going down this path is the enjoyment of writing, there are things like writers block and if this occurs it could have a significant impact on your financials and what's you back up plan or contingency in this situation, because the costs will keep coming at you month after month and if you don't meet these commitments it will impact on your writings. You will end up writing to meet the bills and enjoyment will float away.
Consider stabilizing your financial position and have enough contingent funds to meet expenses for say 6 months and then do your writing knowing full well you have enough funds to see you through this window period.
I agree whole heartedly that you must have milestones, but you need something more than that what you need are tasks that assist you in achieving these milestones as these are checked quarterly/half yearly or even annually and for your set up this is too infrequent to review. With tasks you can be definitive like, "writing four hours each and every morning except Saturdays and Sunday"; "writing 2000 words a day", and other such tasks which keep you on the straight and narrow daily. The human is a unique creature they can find all manner of reason for not be disciplined and for deferring a commitment.
I would also suggest that you do an internal uniquely to you mind map where you set out the plot of your article, this will bring structure, thread, timing and conclusions.
I would also speak to subreddit and try and get a sense what articles are popular and once you establish that try and find out who your target market really is do you want to do travel doccies, drama, theatre, humour, serious stuff, text books, or read and throw away type articles
Could go on but may exceed forum word count

But most of all I wish you success with your chosen endeavours

Taste published a voluntary sens notification on 4/10/2016 and in the final paragraph it states that it anticipates publishing its results on or about 12/10/2016 but I have no record of a sens being issued on that date or near it. So not sure what went on here
Have not seen a JSE warning regarding the company either

1st discovery - my Discovery medical aid premium went up by a whopping 19%
2nd discovery - using my Clicks card at NuMetro to pay for a ticket actually costs R5 more on a Wednesday  :wall:
Well I wouldn't complain I have GAP insurance over and above my medical aid premiums. The GAP Insurance is run by PSG and they have just ramped up the premium from R 155 to R 210 per month so that's about 35% increase

My 2c - no one shop is cheapest on everything. Also, some small 7-11 type shops can have good prices, esp if the supplier is to small to supply the large stores. I always buy milk (R7L and cheese) in one.

Never get to a stage where you NEED to buy something, always have a backup and when you open that, start looking for a special - for non perishables obviously - and freezer items.

I understand that no one shop is cheaper on everything. That is why I am looking for one that will be the cheapest in general for the specific basket of groceries I want to buy at that specific time. So want a website where I can just search for the products I want, have them added to a virtual shopping basket, and then have the website tell me which shop will be the cheapest for that set of groceries. That is a big ask, though. Thus I will settle for one where I choose the product, it lists the prices of all the supermarkets for that product side by side, and then I can just keep a notepad at my side and write down the prices for each product, from each supermarket, and add then up myself.
You could also just create a spreadsheet with your local area supermarket names as the header and then list the products you generally buy on the x axis and merely place a "1" per the supermarket with the cheapest price. Once you have populated the spreadsheet all you do is sum the columns and the supermarket which has the greatest value is the supermarket that you go to, to buy your goodies

Maybe Google Wendy Knowler and then write to her to see what she could suggest as whether there is a comprehensive listing across all supermarkets.
She used to run the consumer column in the Sunday Slimes but has stopped this column - most annoying

I may be wrong but I think these could be mortgage participation bonds and as you state your funds are locked in for 5 years.
I don't think there is anything wrong with this investment class but you really need to sit down and look at your whole investment horizon and decide how much you want to invest in different classes of investments. Also there is no way that you can exit these instruments ahead of time unless you can prove "necessitous circumstances" which could be medical or death, but there will be penalties raised for early release

I would suggest that you look at structuring an investment portfolio, consider what you may need in each class of investment and if a component is investing in the stock exchange then read up and attend seminars on how to invest - banks at one stage used to run such courses as did the JSE from time to time

Finally ask question of this forums community - never be afraid to ask question even those that may seem silly to you - nothing worse than getting your fingers burnt because you failed to ask a question

Good luck
