Hi Orca, I've been trying to work out how to receive your posts to my email but I'm too doff!!  Please help . tx rond
I don't think it can be done and I don't post much anymore as we are pretty much house bound with my wife's feeding tube. I have to give her 150 ml water every hour as she tends to get it into her lungs if drinking orally.

Radiation and chemo therapy does get rid of cancer but not the cancer stem cells. They can remain in remission for many years and to keep it in remission I have to pump soup into her with lots of cayenne pepper, turmeric and cumin. She can eat bland food as her taste buds are overly sensitive.

She has picked up 11kg since leaving hospital and climbs 83 stairs down the flat and back up unaided every day. This is a great improvement as she could not lift herself up 1 step unaided 2 months ago. :TU:
Glad to hear your wife's health is improving - all strength to you both with the recovery

ADI has a great CEO and management team that are hell bent on growing the company hence their frequent acquisitions. This is why they only pay divies once a year at a low percentage. These acquisitions hurt their results and frighten investors. The past 5% increase in HYE HEPS is great despite their new acquisition. I will hold as they have enough cash to make more acquisitions. They are in competition with EOH as the CEO said.
I will also hold but will add more on the dips - which are quite frequent

Sounds like me and  Long 4 Life, I've been buying since the IPO and it's still dropping
I also bought L4L - 2 weeks after launch but steered clear of Anchor Group as it seems that all listings this year have settled below their listing price - suppose the hubris wears off - the saying "the market knows all" is probably true. Anchor price over the last 12 months shows R 10.20 as a high , against a low of R 4.40 and current R 4.80 so may be opportune to wait a few months and then buy. I bought Sygnia and currently they are just keeping head above water

I hold STXIND in my private portfolio and my TFSA, and in my TFSA I also hold SYGWD

As to having  R 1.0 million to invest I would create a reasonable portfolio of small industrial shares, retailers and healthcare/pharmacy such as Clicks, Dis - Chem and also maybe some Discovery -especially since they seem to be getting into other business operations like insurance etc.
My view is that when the economy does recover small business will lead the way and prices will rise the quickest as they are nimble, and retail will also benefit but people having more to spend on discretionary items and feel good purchases
However if Zuma departs soon and the exchange rate improves significantly then I believe funds will exit the country quite significantly through Saffers taking funds off shore

If you already have a stock broking company which you use, you really need to talk to them regarding the TFSA type accounts. I have incurred some R 6.90 in charges which were brokerage fees and hold both STXIND and DBXWD which are doing rather nicely. I review my investments monthly and on projection on interest income for the tax year and I see that I will exceed the ceiling for interest then I move funds to my TFSA account
However I don't see TFSA as a store of wealth especially with our high inflation, falling off interest rates and negative exchange rates we as Rand denominated investors are becoming poorer keeping the funds in SA :'(

Had a quick look at the Sunday Times Top 100 listings yesterday and one of the counters I hold Adapt IT was placed 2nd over 5 years.
My holdings are showing a 31% fall in value since September 2015 - so they must have, had to do exceptionally well in the previous 2 years to achieve 2hnd place. Currently they are the 2nd most costly share in my portfolio as I am down about R 26,000 on my holdings, but then again its better than my Taste shares which are costing me in excess of R 100,000 in losses.
Orca must also be screaming because I think he also has taken a substantial thump with Adapt It in his private portfolio

Come on Zuma move to Siberia

If you draw cash against your credit card then you don't enjoy the benefit of the 55 days interest free period - that was the purpose of the money card. Also remember that if you fail to liquidate the outstanding transaction by the 55th day then interest is charged from date that the transaction was processed. Also the banks have changed their method of processing transaction in that instead of the transaction being the date that the transaction was physically booked to your account, it is now backdated to the actual transaction date - which has reduced the 55 days to 53 days

Just take note, he bought futures not stock.

In noob language, he's trading not investing.

In plain language, he expects a spike up (he went long) - but he will dump them very quickly when whatever he knows/expects becomes public.

Quick in and out, not long term.

Because he chooses futures, I'm pretty convinced he is very sure of his move.
I see signals of insider trading - its about time the authorities responsible stopped directors trading in their shares as opposed to investing. Years back Acc Ross and Venter Trailers directors did a lot of this type of manoeuvring

Orca - I tend to agree with you on STXIND - my view is that the only way the country will recover is through the industrial sector, mining is dead and corrupt. Other sector will only show real growth in industrials take off and they are by far the most likely sector to grow staff numbers

Cash is included gcr, so your ranking appears to be accurate
Thanks Patrick - seems that a few of my holdings are worse than leaking buckets and look a bit like the dams in Western Cape

Just had a look at the leader board and though I am not doing great I see that I dropped from about 150 to 290 and all because I have not utilized my recent cash injection also the person sitting in 291 has some R600,000 sitting in cash
Surely the ranking should be based on the value of the shares in the portfolio and the unutilized cash component of one's holdings?

My only caution would be watch when Bekker starts selling off shares - he took his salary in shares for years so if they suffer a retracement he would be hurt quite considerably

Orca, when the chips are down how do you cope? I hope for you that mrs's health improves

I'm not at all religious but I prayed for the first time in my adult life as did a hundred friends and family. I also thought I was like a cowboy as they only cry when their horse dies. I shed some tears with our girls when things looked dire and this made us stronger as a family and we can beat all odds together.

This is all behind us now and at the rate of her recovery she would be back to normal in a month.  :TU:
Hi Orca - glad to see your wife's health is improving - all strength to her and you and the family in this difficult recovery process

Some countries (I think Malta may be one) normally want you to introduce a qualifying amount of funds into their country by way of purchasing a home and buying a passport.
Also to my mind having suffered under old RA's they are a dead loss. Also on the downside once you invest your RA proceeds into a Living Annuity you are compelled to draw 2.5% annually - which in my case doesn't suit me as I want the capital to grow and earmarked the funds for when I turn 80 in 10 years time.
Also trying to minimize tax may place you in a country that you may personally not have an affinity with when you do retire and put all these tax tricks into place
To my mind this whole question of tax avoidance needs to be looked at more deeply and maybe talk to those forumites who have emigrated/work in off shore countries but earn funds here and abroad to bring some reality to the whole question of being a worldly person - an international nomad if you like
