Looking specifically at our market which has been as volatile as 2007/8 here are some sobering numbers related to the ALSI:-
6/10/2017   57328.07
10/10/2017 57670.29 T40 51502.53
26/10/2017 58852.54
06/11/2017 60086.92 T40 53682.89
21/11/2017 61267.94 T40 55156.55
25/01/2018  61684.77

These number represented the highest highs
Today
13/06/2018 58437.23 T 40 52200.03 and today the ALSI moved higher by 229.41 points and the T40 290.63
So the reality is that we have had significant retracements on the indices and also our exchange rate has deteriorated quite substantially

Not a pretty picture - if only the NPA would start criminalizing some of those persons responsible for state capture and theft

So JaDEB - what's the answer - my share portfolio has dropped by R 116,000 this week and R 250,000 this month- is the old expression "sell in May and go away" starting to raise it's ugly head again!!

Moneyweb has an article on investing offshore - it also cover (though scantily) the issue of estate duty in countries where your funds are invested

you can use western union, moneygram, or payoneer..!!!
Interesting comment - as an ex banker how did you manage to open an account in a foreign domicile without completing that territories required documentation. Was this bank willing to accept address details as an SA domiciled citizen, and did they waive any documentary submissions. Also interested to hear how those who have in fact funded overseas accounts - what was the description of your remittance of funds to the overseas bank

Thanks guys and pretty much as I thought and I'm definitely going to start offloading property and start investing a bit smarter with hopefully less stress involved! I'm sure a 15-20% annual return is achievable so any ideas on that? Are ETF's the only answer?
Yozzi - I think there are a few matters you need to consider whilst or before you build up a portfolio. Time - if you have plenty of time whilst the market is open then you can get onto your brokers platform and watch price movements frequently during the day. If time is not on your side than select an ETF that gives reasonable returns and shows a price growth over 5 years or more. This at start of your investing in the stock exchange is a realatively safe way to start. The next big step is reading up on companies - if you can use your broker platform and can create a watchlist then do so and add companies that you are considering investing in. On my brokers platform they have a statutory section which is a bit like a fact sheet listing all directors what the companies purpose is all about what subsidiaries they control, what dividends they have paid over the years. It may also show you the companies high/low price for the last 12 months - this could indicate where the company is in a price cycle.
Once you have checked all the companies on your watch list then select 3 -5 of the better companies invest in them. Also read the companies sens bulletins to see how they are operating
Its also important (well it is to me anyway) as to who the competitors are in the sector that your selected companies operate in and whether the company you are selecting is the best in that sector

Have fun learning

I never used to phone around. Always stayed with A&G for many years. Until one day I realised my premium was over R1000 but I would've been lucky to sell the car for R20 000. And since then I've realised the auto insurance sellers are just as bad as the life assurance/insurance sellers. They all con the public by saying their increases are inflation linked. Or cost related. Which they are, let's be fair. But the unsuspecting public believes inflation linked is CPI linked. Which is not the case. It's linked to the company's cost of doing business, which goes up every year by a certain rate, I suppose what one would call their in-house inflation rate or cost of doing business. Operating costs. It's got nothing to do with CPI. So if their expenses go up, our premiums go up.
It really does pay to shop around and negotiate with your insurer - household goods are normally on a new for old and that the goods are easily transportable - I have some heavy equipment (woodworking) which I cover but on the principal that these items are not transportable unless they bring a large truck and a contingent of labour to remove these items so my premiums have been adjusted downwards due their shear weight. Also cover cars on the basis of book value plus 10% (my determination). Also I get discounted premiums for having an alarm system linked to a reaction company and I also got a reduction in premiums when I installed a 5 camera system to cover entry to my property from any direction

Interesting discussion on TFSA's - firstly I opened a separate TFSA account with my present brokers and negotiated a fee structure which is more than satisfactory.
All my counters in are ETF and I hold STXIND, SYGWD, ASHMID - the only negative is the Ashburton but that because I only recently invested in them. I still await the purchase of STXNDQ but the price is just not right at the moment - waiting on some dollar weakness. To my mind Mutual Funds are not necessarily to right options for TFSA's - their growth progressions are too slow for my needs - I want growth of at least 12 - 16% p.a.

May be an interesting exercise to get forum ikes to list what they are holding in their TFSA's

Anyone care to explain the huge drop in the Rand/Dollar exchange rate 16 cents is worrying - can't believe it is due to the Dollar strength as we have also lost 1.03% against the Pound

On March 3, 2018 Martin Hesse wrote an article for IOL's Personal Finance section on the ability to move TFSA's from one provider to another and it is apparent that there are no transfer fees to be levied and the issue around selling ETF and then moving the cash is covered.
Suggest you read the article and any others before making any decision to move from one provider to another

I was actually planning to blog a little about TFSAs this month and how there really is only one provider to use now which is EE.

EE vs. Sygnia's index tracking unit trusts?
Sygnia isn't bad especially now that many of their funds have a TER of 0.35%, but their international stuff is expensive, and it a new ETF comes on the the market that is fantastic, you can't really switch easily. I'll stick to Sygnia for RA's though.
Patrick - not sure why you still consider RA's the fees levied, and the returns one gets its probably easier to run ETF's via your TFSA account and the excess over R 33,000 pa into non TFSA ETF. I am fairly convinced that this approach will out perform a conventional RA
