Shares / Junk Status - how to prepare
« on: May 26, 2016, 01:01:36 pm »
hi guys

i did search on the forum a bit, but it doesn't seem like there is a thread directly related to this.

asssuming most of you did your research already, but what will be the best / ? safest investment ETF to carry you through the junk status?

i know some local shares and thus ETF's coupled to them might stick through a junk rating, but i dont want to do the long term thing only to discover 2/3 years down the line that we are not going to recover :(

currently i am into the following ETF's :

DIVTRX +- 60%
then equally divided:
STXIND
DBXUS
DBXWD
STXFIN
PTXTEN
PTXSPY

what sectors will be hurt the most on a junk rating?

my feeling is to just jump ship onto DBXUS / DBXWD, as i dont think the USD/ZAR will ever recover with a bad rating..

sigh.... zuma fail

Thx fuys

Update to version 4.1(8/03/2016)
* Added the latest tax tables (note that tax tables for future years is automatically adjusted based on a 10 year average.)
* improved the CGT formulae to allow adapting to future tax changes (latest tax change moved the previous 33% up to 40%)

*pending - still to Add the RA contribution limit ( there is an annual amount after which the tax benefit doesn't apply on a RA)

On the other hand Darren, there is currently a fire sale going on. How much lower the prices will go I have no idea. But I am sure there is some bargains out there.

Please note however if you go to http://investorchallenge.co.za/ , you will see I am currently last.

so just DONT put it in LONMIN :P  :))

They should have told you that last year, not now that the markets / China / Oil / LON - frikkin everything is down.
Yes, around April would have been nice. They could have also mentioned that we'd want to convert our rand to dollars  :wall:

yes looking glass would have been great.

My big balls up last year - new investor jitters - when China gave issues in August i decided to pull all investments. then 10 days later to reinvest in the same shares.

keeping track of both portfolios before and after sell - currently sitting at 60k loss :( :(

where is that time machine

Yes, we have traveled a bit. Been to Spain and the UK but will have to wait a while for the markets to recover as we want to meet our kids in Prague for a summer holiday. Too much rain here in winter.
Our flights to the UK and back were for free as the carrier never deducted the fee off my credit card.  O:-)
That was 4 months ago.
The UK was beautiful but sooo expensive. Meat and wine is about 4 X more expensive than here so no more UK.

Free flights will certainly help my travel plans! :D
can you maybe borrow me that golden credit card of yours? ;)

isnt Prague and portugal on the same hemisphere thus same time winter?

ah ok understood :)

yes getting to know a new market is not the easiest of things.

the thing i overlooked in your previous post : €100 a month less - that is actually a crapload in rand terms!

Thank you for keeping us updated otherwise!

Do you by any chance plan to travel a bit around the area/europe? or will that be out of budget.

An update. Have to find a cheaper country to go to due to the demise of the ZAR and is really hurting me now.
Decided on Cyprus. Although I have tax exemption here in Portugal for 10 years, Cyprus has a tax threshold of €29 500.00.
I will never get near that so will never pay tax.
Rental properties there are on average €100 cheaper than here in Portugal. A sea view 2 bed apartment goes for under R5k and it is furnished and has air-conditioner and under floor heating. The plus factor is that they drive on the same side of the road as SA.

Hi Orca

care to elaborate a bit on your current portfolio or plans?

EG is your investments still in SA, and you are selling a portion off to survive?

thus moving to Cypus wont make a difference - unless you find a way to transfer /invest the whole portfolio in an EU market somewhere? or am i missing the boat here?

Thx
