So, I quite like this debate as my brother in law is an analyst for a fund management firm. I've written about why I think they're a waste of cash before (http://investorchallenge.co.za/those-fees-are-blatantly-robbing-you/), but now the head of sygnia has jumped in with a great article, also in favour of passive investing: http://www.moneyweb.co.za/investing/unit-trusts/arguments-against-passive-investing/
Is there anyone here who still considers units trusts a decent investment?
Maybe a different question, but how many people here think they can beat the index over a decent period of time?

Have to agree, the people here are great. I wouldn't even be in the stock market if it wasn't for Orca, and the stuff I continuosly learn from the rest of the crowd is fantastic. Strangely the exact things Orca said that motivated me to get my ass into gear and invest decently got him banned from the other forum. Can't figure it out???

I decided to make a couple more rings last night. Firstly I was dying to use the lighter wood I bought, but couldn't roll, so this time I made the inner in the dark wood, and wrapped lighter wood around:
Then my SO asked for something thinner, so this time I tried a different technique by stacking the wood in layers. I used dark wood on the outside, and three light stips on the inside, but alternated the grain so it looks like there are 3 different types of wood instead of 2:
