And then gains again the next day. Currency traders must be making a killing, or losing the shirt off their backs!

R15.21/$, now all we need is for moodys to not downgrade us and we might dip under R15 for the first time in a long time.

So someone posted a link to smart dollar cost averaging on MMM. http://www.bnn.ca/News/2016/2/1/Larry-Berman-Smart-dollar-cost-averaging-.aspx

I know people say don't time the market, but...

Interesting, it sounds almost too easy, just buy on days when the market is down. But what would have happened if instead of dollar cost averaging they put their whole annual contribution in at the beginning of the year? Would smart DCA beat lump sum?

Ideally they would run all three options over every rolling 10 year period for all the months since 1926. I have a feeling the lump sum would still win on average, the smart dollar cost averaging would come second and dollar cost averaging third.

Anyone have a few months free to run the numbers  :D

Ah I was wondering what happened. Moody's announces they're coming and the rand strengthens, didn't make sense to me!

Deciding when to move money out of SA (if at all ever?).

Why would you want to leave South Africa, it is one of the best places on the planet:

Rated on purchasing power, safety, climate, health care, traffic, property prices and pollution Cape Town is:

I also quite like it here, but I'd like to travel too. Regardless of that though, I do think at least some of my money should leave at some point, but hopefully at a far better rate than we're seeing at the moment.

In case anyone is wondering, all the RMB ETFs are now called ASH ETFs after the name change to Ashburton.

what the objective Patrick? To trade or to just to have hard currency? Do you need to access overseas? Does leverage bother you?

payoneer.com - might be worth looking at

It's all part of the research into a cost effective way to get money out of SA should I want to do that at some stage, and I mean out out, not just in a different currency.

I'm looking into payoneer, but still need to see what their costs look like. I really wish TransferWise would open up in SA. They facilitate peer to peer transfers, so in effect your money doesn't cross borders, and actually isn't converted at all, it's just given to someone who wanted your currency for theirs. It's very cheap, but at the moment only transfers to rand, and not from it.

I'd love to hear from you. I'm not particularly keen to get into trading, but I'm thinking it might be a cost effective way to convert ZAR to USD.

After a bunch of research I've found that I can exchange most major currencies with my interactive brokers brokerage account, for instance I can convert USD to GBP or EUR to USD for 0.01% commission. They allow me to convert to and from ZAR very cheaply too, but don't have a local account so I can't deposit ZAR unfortunately.

@Frans, when we enabled selling we agreed that it needs to be traded at least 16 times per day, any idea if it is traded that much? anyone else have that data perhaps?
