I did this homework 4 years ago and at that stage it was R50. What was important at that stage for me was that you could attend all their courses as that was included by default in the 50 bucks. For a starter I recommend those free courses. They sure helped me a lot.

Talking about long term investments - If the market is destined for a serious pullback/crash, where do you put your money? What are the options? What do you guys call it, hedging?

My 2 cents - You can put a stop loss on CFD's and most probably on shares also. To me the biggest real "loss" is the tax implications. Although you can write your losses off against your profits. So I'm in two minds about that. The one massive component when trading derivatives like cfd's, you must be an active trader and not a passive trader. You have to monitor it all day like the traders that work for the big companies do. You can't buy and walk away.

When you start trading cfd's or any other geared instrument, that becomes your day job. It is crucial that you understand that. Prepare yourself to sit in front of the screen for 8 hours straight. I can warn you. It is emotional draining. You will reach a stage where you think that the time spend in front of the screen is crazy, although you are making money. I have seen guys that make big profits, and I mean big profits, walk away. Your work (trading) life balance goes right out the window. Most traders nail it down to say 4 hours per day and then they walk away.

Working in a nuclear silo, is nothing compared to trading with derivatives :wall:

The Investor Challenge / Re: ETF's?
« on: April 15, 2014, 07:28:56 am »
For Info purposes:

Standard Bank launched a listed palladium ETF on 24 March 2014.

In addition to the AfricaPalladium ETF (exchange traded fund), the AfricaGold and AfricaPlatinum ETFs listed on 7 April 2014.

Standard Bank Group was the first bank to list local ETNs (exchange trade notes) on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 2010 with the launch of ETNs that track the performance of gold, platinum, palladium and silver followed by the Africa Equity ETN.

The commodity ETFs offer investors a different investment class with several benefits including exposure to the physical commodity, some level of protection from negative real interest rates. Regulation 28 of the Pension Funds Act specifically allows for commodity exposure of up to 10 % through ETF's and ETN's. AfricaETF investors will have the option of physical delivery of the metals should they hold the necessary approvals, alternatively settlement in cash at the equivalent metal value on redemption of the ETF.

The AfricaPalladium, AfricaGold and AfricaPlatinum ETFs will be treated as local assets and have no exchange control implications for investors.

Shares / Re: A Dividend question
« on: April 14, 2014, 05:39:35 pm »
Well you do need a lot of shares to create a dividend income, but my solution for that is share installments and any other derivative that has gearing and very little time decay, like, and correct me if I am wrong, CFD's.

For example, share installments are geared 2 to 1. Of course you do not get geared derivatives on all shares, but that I will figure out how to do. For now I just want to get the nitty gritty out of the way.

Shares / A Dividend question
« on: April 13, 2014, 08:35:11 am »
Is there a website anywhere that will give me a summary of shares that pay dividends with the following information:
Share price
Dividend information
and most important, how often and when normally based on past payout dates.

Why - I want to build an income portfolio out of dividend stocks. Bugger the growth. I want a dividend income every single month for 12 months per year. To me it's all about cashflow!

Yes I can go into every stock/ETF/ETN and go and look at this on a chart but what a slep! Surely there must be a website where this is logged?

Yes this site does help but it does not have past dates and how often - http://www.topyields.nl/Top-dividend-yields-of-JSE.php

This feels like dangerous times. A global reset of all the indicators is required before mind blowing new heights can be achieved again. But I have seen us reach new heights on minimum volume. So don't take my word for it. Just have those stops in place.
