I would keep it in cash until the markets find direction.

I am also at the  :wtf: to do stage.

Thinking back to post 2008, we a few similar situations that we now have and I sold all my CML stocks and only to buy it back at a loss. I have posted this before and will repeat it.
Had I just stayed in, I would have made 1 670% gains. Yes. One thousand six hundred and seventy percent.
Stupid me only made around 400% and still had to pay tax on my sales.
That was a massive R7M loss.
Now I have to watch my pennies.

I will go with Dawie Roodt's advice.
If you don’t know, wait;
If you want to move cash overseas, park it locally for a few weeks before making a call;
If the rand goes to R21 or weaker soon, it’s probably a total overreaction; bring cash back;
If the rand goes to R16.00 or better, the equivalent level achieved a year after the 1985 collapse, take money out;
Anything in between should be determined by normal investment considerations.

The DIVTRX is heavy into the much oversold banking sector and this must correct soon. My consolation.

The sudden selloff of emerging markets and the plunging ZAR changed everyone's view in a short space of time.

What still worries me is that FX analysts seem to agree that the ZAR is the most oversold ever and the charts show a correction was due for some weeks.
If commodities pick up, then it is quite possible for the ZAR to gain below 13.00 again. This is very possible and could be in a month or 6 or 12. Nobody can tell when, but it has to happen.

Banks have already shorted the ZAR. Institutional Investors have already left for greener pastures. Will I be doing what I always do? Buy high and sell low.

After my further research last night and this morning, I will rather stay away from DBX and BAT for now.

Brait achieved a growth of over 100% in 2015 and did so for the previous 2 years as well. BAT is the major shareholder of New Look, Virgin Active, Premier Foods and Iceland. This makes her immune to market performance as they are unlisted companies and not traded.

The shedding of Steinhoff and their preference shares puts her in a position to do better. A very wise move.
With a PE ratio of 2.2, she is cheap at the moment.
Not only a Rand hedge but a defensive stock as well. A must have in any one's portfolio.

I have been looking for opportunities to sell off my DIVTRX and MTA (70% of portfolio) but they are not behaving as I expected as I want to go 50/50 into BAT and DBXUS.

Look at the much loved Woolies. Great numbers out yesterday but she tanked. This is very concerning to me. BAT was up today again.

I see that list includes Brait. Spent some time looking at it yesterday and I must say she looks good. Mostly invested in GB Pounds so not affected by the declining ZAR. A great Rand hedge but have I missed the boat as the ZAR looks set for a correction.

My apologies. I re read your post and see the 50% is over a 5 year period and mine was over 1 year.

The USD has gained on all currencies and even the Euro and is now overbought and the ZAR is oversold. I stick to my post with the amendment mentioned here.

Off topic but just a correction on @gcr's post.
Not everyone will want to relocate to the USA. Most will go to Europe where the Euro has gained 15% pa over the past 5 years against the ZAR.
To add to that, most of the ZAR loss was due to the emerging market selloff of late and it is oversold. How long will this last?. perhaps a year or 2? Then it will be back to the normal 2.5% pa. A far cry from 50%.

Tax rate for residents is 15% on foreign or national income and no Capital Gains Tax. Dividends are capped at 10% by the DTA. It is not a tax haven.

They should have told you that last year, not now that the markets / China / Oil / LON - frikkin everything is down.
Yes, around April would have been nice. They could have also mentioned that we'd want to convert our rand to dollars  :wall:

yes looking glass would have been great.

My big balls up last year - new investor jitters - when China gave issues in August i decided to pull all investments. then 10 days later to reinvest in the same shares.

keeping track of both portfolios before and after sell - currently sitting at 60k loss :( :(

where is that time machine

Done that cr@p a few times then SARS still rubbed my face in it.

I was serious but on further investigation it will not be a good idea. Syria is a mere stone throw away and is filled with refugees.
The 8 month summers are too hot to handle. The air conditioners are a must have but will negate the savings on rental price.
We will just down scale to a cheaper flat in the old city center here in Viana. We have always wanted one of those old quaint apartments along the city center narrow cobbled roads. Most have been refurbished inside as the outside has to comply to the historical requirements.
Very vibrant and we can "people watch" in our leisure time. All the shops and pubs are within crawling distance and no cars to worry about on our way home.

Yes, we have traveled a bit. Been to Spain and the UK but will have to wait a while for the markets to recover as we want to meet our kids in Prague for a summer holiday. Too much rain here in winter.
Our flights to the UK and back were for free as the carrier never deducted the fee off my credit card.  O:-)
That was 4 months ago.
The UK was beautiful but sooo expensive. Meat and wine is about 4 X more expensive than here so no more UK.
