The Investor Challenge / Re: Best portfolio

This is a difficult question as views will differ as to what the poster's prerequisites are. Here is mine for SuperVan but it is based on technicals and not on fundamentals. Also based on a 3 year holding term and thus taking the PE into consideration.

ADI Good looking chart in uptrend. PE = 18  Sector PE is 41. Great stock for long term.

CML Best performer over many years but might be peaking. PE = 29. No sector PE.

CZA Down trending for a long time. So carry on down?

FGL In uptrend but very volatile. PE very high (53) . Not for long term.

FWX Very volatile and 6m flat in 1y. PE good at 13 compared to sector PE at 24. Opportunistic trade.

MDI. No info for this on Reuters.

NED Volatile and 4 month flatline in 1 year. Recent upswing with banks that was not anticipated. Good PE.

PNC Good chart and low PE ratio of 12 compared to sector of 41. A long term must have.

REI Good looking chart for long term. PE slightly higher than sector at 19 vs 14.5.

SHP Extremely volatile chart and the gain was fortuitous.  In uptrend but PE is at 28 compared to sector at 35

STXSWX Up all the way but rather volatile. The Indi would have been a better choice for an ETF.

To get tax relief, one has to hold the shares for at least 3 years. No matter how good the stock might look now and it's future prospects for further growth, a time will come when it stops performing or tanks. This mostly happens before the 3 years are up and you are forced to make adjustments. You will be extremely lucky if all your stocks keep going up for 3 years. Almost half of your gains will go to tax. That is a waste of your time and money.
For that very reason I would just go for the Indi and chuck it in the bottom drawer.

No need to ask your tax consultant. It is very simple. As you will be investing for less than the 3 year term required for CGT, you will have to add all your gains to your income after selling.
So if you are in the 40% tax bracket, you will pay 40% on your gains. Sux hey?

I agree with jaDEB. We are riding the peak of a wave that has to tumble +- 6 to 8% soon.

I'm actually impressed at how many of the participants are beating inflation. and how few are seeing capital losses... (Not that beating inflation is unexpected).

Actually the performance of the market lately has impressed me. No doubt a correction is due then look again. The minus figures will shoot up.

That's what got me into trouble. I was under the impression that I could buy and sell as I wished and as long as the gains are not withdrawn into my bank account for my personal use, it would not be considered a tax event.

If you hold your shares for a minimum of 3 years in either of your 2 accounts, you will only pay CGT.
You have done the correct thing by separating your investment account from your trading account as now you will only pay income tax as revenue on your trading account.  All your gains or losses made after each trade will be a tax event whether you withdraw it or not.

Yeh. I know how you feel. Sickening to invest in healthy stuff. You must reprimand them. Shout at them. They will then go up. Reminds me to reprimand mine now.

PNC.   :frustrated: Are you in DOS mode again. Sleeping I think. You are embarrassing me in front of 300+ people here. What's wrong with you? Look at your pal CML that now has to carry you in my portfolio. Get off your butt and get going. Your bosses bought you more toys as in acquisitions and you not interested !!!
MTA.   :frustrated:  Are your batteries flat? Your boss just bought you a R2.2B battery buddy and you got revved up for 2 days then lost interest. I already said here that you are the next CML and now you embarrass me like this. Put some spark in there and get your wheels rolling mate.
CML.  ^-^ Thank you for doing so well. Talk some sense into your room mates and get them going. Then you must rest as you must be tired now. I don't mind if you have a rest my friend.

You are wrong Orca.  :frustrated:

It is comparative periods. First half was up 88% compared to the previous first half year.
The full year was up by 110% compared to the previous full year.
So we should see my R96.00 per share this year.

Can someone please tell me I'm wrong with the 20% second half earnings. Surely I must be if you look at the massive increase in AUM. Then again, that increase might have happened mostly in the first half.

I wonder if she will tank now? HY results was 88% and FY +- 110%. This makes it around 20% for second HY. Not bad but much less.

Orca Im keen to learn how you pick those stocks. Would you mind sharing your stock picking strategy?
Eish. You put me in a spot now. I might get shouted at and I don't want you to loose your money.
In short. Look for stocks that have a good past performance like the one that jaDEB posted above. Then read through the SENS to find out what's been happening. Read their website. If you're satisfied that the fundamentals and prospects are good for the continuance of that trend then buy it.
Don't look for stocks that are trending too high as you will land up with an ELI. CML is a case in point.
This has done me well since 2009.
For added safety, make sure the PE ratio is good for long term.

There are many shares with good L/T growth.

But I am the impatient type :)

I have a % of my portfolio in L/T stuff, But I have to play the market as I buy alot of toys and need above average growth to pay for them.

The market is very volatile since 2009 and investors/trader very jittery. So the overeact to news sometimes.

As happened with TGK today
If you wanna buy a lot of Blow up dolls and Dildos and stuff then you must invest in stocks that are not volatile. Look at jaDEB's example above. That is my favorite old Omnia. A good steady, unvolatile stock that is reliable 60% per annumer.
There are many more to choose from to suite your fetishes. Just ask.
I also used to buy those toys when I was your age you know.

Thanks for the prompt replies. They should be here in 30 minutes.

Thanks for the pointers gcr. Taken note but MP's post is what my wife told me as well. Women's intuition prevails as always. So I'll go with that.
