Indi in quite a pullback. Do the experts here see it going any lower into the 40's?

Starting to look like a nice buying opportunity. Would be even better at the 45 mark.

This is the reason for this post if mine Patrickhttp://www.shareforum.co.za/off-topic/accuratley-calculating-portfolio-performance/

Using the surplus funds from the access bond would yield a larger return on the lump sum purchase at the beginning of the year and allow one to reach said goal 2years earlier than if one had to invest monthly alone. In my eyes its a risk I don't have the appetite for.

However, I've now decided to play it safe and rather pay the bond off over the next 5 months, securing the roof over my head, not having to endure interest rate hikes with increased bond installments should they occur and the possibility of watching the etf prices decrease on the lump sum investment. Doing it this way for me and at the same time being more conservative allows for rand cost averaging while the portfolio grows in value.

Yes it will take 2 or so years longer to reach the goal, but at the same time I won't be betting the house on the market. I will sleep a lot better knowing this and won't be having to check how the portfolio is performing or underperforming every day.

As most profess that this site is to learn, would some one mind explaining how it works? What are the signals one looks for in order to short a stock? Generally how long does a short last, is their a specific window of opportunity etc.?

@Yozzi, here's a nice video/presentation on JustOneLap on where Simon Brown foresees the 2014 market http://www.justonelap.com/webinarDetail.asp?intWebinarID=186

Register and have a watch. He talks of the various DBX ETF's and in particular the US MSCI which he's watching closely, good talk in my opinion.

I'm also just starting out Yozzi. I'm keenly watching the STXINDI. If you want more local exposure you could look at the STXRESI and STX FINI. Their charts don't look as great and as stable as the STXINDI does. But if you going to buy all 3 then you might as well just buy the STX40.

For myself I'm considering STXINDI only for definite, around 75% of the portfolio and the other 25% with off shore exposure in the DBX WORLD or DBX US.

STXINDI returned 35.59% on a lump sum investment with DIVI's reinvested. That's a decent return, and many traders I guess battle to make that in a year based on what I've read.

Also go check out www.justonelap.co.za, there's a lot of learning material and videos on there. Perhaps it will help you.

Why not just go all into the STXIND for now while you're learning?

Been scratching my head over this. Anyone care to check me and confirm my logic is sound. Patrick and gcr's response's in this old thread of mine has got me thinking about this. http://www.shareforum.co.za/off-topic/anyone-paid-off-their-bonds-before-investing-in-equities/

Calculator here doesn't help me with this, as it only allows you to punch in a fixed return(interest) without being able to factor the return should a lump sum have been invested in the beginning of the year, which will give you a different return over a 1 year period, than if you split the lump sum equally over the 12months. Not sure if I'm making sense.

A stock returns 35% dividends reinvested over the last year had one invested a lump sum at the beginning of the year.

I want to calculate performance and end amount should a lump sum of, oh lets say, 1mil invested at the start of the year + 30k monthly deposits over 5 years assuming the stock continues to return the same every year.

Obviously investing only 30k every month over that period will not allow you to achieve a 35% return. A thumb suck result to be around 15% or so.

Am right in saying on the 1mil lump sum invested at the start, the return would be 35%, and on the 30k monthly investments 15%.

Then in the second year, total invested(lump sum+monthly deposits) + returns will again earn a 35% return, and the 30k monthly investment 15% and so on for the remaining years?

As the game past is now history, it may be fun to save the first games bought on record and update the prices to see where they end next year, ie challenge 1.

and bit of glance in the past, no need to just kill it
Agreed, that will be interesting to see if you could do it patrick.
