Shares / Are the PE ratios for dual listed stocks 'overstated' here ?
« on: October 31, 2013, 04:20:30 pm »
Take SAB.

Per LSE. (Last available and latest published results)

Earnings =157,35 pence p.share (financial year ended 31/3/2013)
Price       = 3460p  (29/3/2013)
PE           = 22

LSE Now.

Earnings = 157,35 pps (as above because latest)
Price       = 3272 pps (i.e. lower than then)
PE           = 20,79

In SA.

Price     = 524.00 (Was lower @485.00 on 31/3/2013 as opposed to LSE price on 31/3/13 which was higher).

But our PE here in SA = ±30

All due to exchange rate weakening, which caused an increase in stock price.

So, I reckon that those analysts who harp on the terrible overvaluation of such stocks may be somewhat misled ??????

Interview With George Soros: 'Greece Can Never Pay Back Its Debt'

Quote
Should Greece have a large part of its debt waived? Absolutely, says George Soros, otherwise the country will never recover. The billionaire investor also warns about the rise of extremist parties if Germany does not change its policies towards Europe.

Hmm.. and what about the US ?

I like this one. A small/mid cap logistics company also quoted on the NYSE. About 51% of earnings sourced offshore i.e. a Rand hedge.
(In my opinion the Rand will weaken going forward).
Only problem is the recent overexuberant valuation (P:E=25). The stock has come off the boil in the past 2 weeks from an all time high
of 650 and has been trading between 495-530 during the past couple of days.

Anyone else like this stock for LT ?  http://www.mixtelematics.com/

I like ..

The market, like the Lord, helps those who help themselves. But, unlike the Lord, the market does not forgive those who know not what they do – Warren Buffett, 1982.

A lot was learned reading these five years of letters. Mr Buffett, as always, also mentions some of his delights, like drinking Cherry cokes, as well as some of his dislikes. He has a general distrust of investment bankers (“don’t ask the barber whether you need a haircut”.) He heavily criticises academics for teaching the efficient market hypothesis and he dislikes Wall Street and its stockbrokers.

Off topic / The shutdown in US.
« on: October 02, 2013, 09:40:19 am »
In first day of U.S. shutdown, no sign how it will end

I think this impasse is more serious than the markets are interpreting it, and if it drags on till Oct 17th, being the date when the debt ceiling would need to be raised, there will surely be a 'correction' of crash proportions.
That might be a buying opportunity.

(As an aside, the Republicans are quite right, the Affordable Health Care Plan is certainly not affordable, just like our crappy NHI. Socialism simply does not work - witness Europe. With socialism, come election time, political parties fall over themselves/outdo each other to please and appease the masses without giving any thought as to the consequences of taking on more and more debt, burdening entrepreneurs (the damn capitalists), with higher taxes and more red tape, while pandering to the masses in order to get their uninformed votes. It's called populism.
You know, capitalists have a tough time, they borrow funds - money - to start some venture. Then they need to be able to pay the interest on their borrowings. The risks to success are huge, costs need to be controlled - yes labour is a bloody fixed cost, fixed meaning you can't control it - the socialists don't fully grasp this, they also don't realise that, by nature, everyone is a capitalist.)

Rant over.

Will wait to see how the 'shutdown' plays out before making any purchase decisions.

US markets have shot up after the news ..

Taking into account the extent of federal fiscal retrenchment, the Committee sees the improvement in economic activity and labor market conditions since it began its asset purchase program a year ago as consistent with growing underlying strength in the broader economy. However, the Committee decided to await more evidence that progress will be sustained before adjusting the pace of its purchases. Accordingly, the Committee decided to continue purchasing additional agency mortgage-backed securities at a pace of $40 billion per month and longer-term Treasury securities at a pace of $45 billion per month.

All our woes in a nutshell. Interest rates should really be increased to counter some of the outflows.

No Peace at Mines Exacerbates Risk: South Africa Credit

Quote
More than a year after South Africa’s worst mining violence since the end of apartheid, platinum mines are still striving to restore peace, a factor driving up the nation’s default risk faster than for emerging-market peers.

Quote
Current account and fiscal deficits, slower economic growth and the lowest interest rates in more than 30 years leave South Africa vulnerable to external shocks, Mphaphuli said. The nation needs average inflows of 16 billion rand ($1.6 billion) a month to finance the shortfall on its current account, according to Standard Bank Group Ltd. (SBK), Africa’s largest bank.

Foreign investors have sold a net 6.23 billion rand of bonds since May 22, when Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said the U.S. may reduce monetary stimulus that has helped boost demand for emerging-market assets. Inflows have dropped to 24.8 billion rand this year, compared with 63.1 billion rand a year earlier, according to JSE Ltd., which runs the nation’s stock and bond exchanges.
