Shares / Re: Listed Property
« on: April 12, 2013, 08:21:32 pm »
I've recently left physical property to move into equity. I have considered having a portion in listed property due to the good dividends, but the fact that the dividends are classed as interest has kept me until now, but I'm beginning to reconsider.
Puts/Pls form the core of my portfolio since about 15 years - no regrets. Can be classed as defensive, although there is some risk when interest rates shoot up, akin to bonds. You will find interest distributions increase on average by some 8 % p.a.

Check how the indexes outperformed the JSE. ( Also in April, and today).

:) Not to worry, must be the ISP, congestion maybe, I don't know. Once site has loaded links are fine.
If I clear my cache takes about 5 secs. to load.

Some Fed members are getting jittery, calling for scaling back bond purchases.

Treasuries Head for Weekly Loss as Fed May Scale Back

Quote
The Fed should begin to trim its purchases, barring a slump in the economy, Plosser said yesterday in an interview with Bloomberg Television’s Susan Li in Hong Kong.

Plosser is Philadelphia Federal Reserve President.

When QE gets throttled, stocks could plummet ... let's just pray it won't be the biggest Enchilada ever.  ;)

A plausible reason why gold shares have performed so dismally, may be due to Gold ETF's where investors can participate directly in movements of the gold price without the risk inherent in individual gold stocks where you get cost miscalculations, labour issues, poor decisions by management etc.
Then we have the probability of the FED throttling or discontinuing quantitative easing, not right now, but it must happen sometime.

So, jaDEB, maybe rather go for Gold ETF's. Can't help out there as I am not familiar with what is available out there.

SA REITs: Will investors benefit?

For us unitholders, not much will change, except that the interest received will not benefit from the annual interest exemption (currently R23,800 for individuals under 65 and R34,500 for individuals over 65) as the income is regarded as rental income.

Good move, confirms what I am looking for in stocks as per my post HERE.

SABMiller to lure drinkers with cheap beer

Quote
Home to some of the world's fastest growing economies, Africa's thirst for beer is surging: analysts estimate beer volumes rose around 7% last year. Excluding the mature South African market, growth reached more than 10%.

This growth is spurring increased competition. SABMiller wants to gain an edge over rivals like Diageo and Heineken by luring consumers who drink cheap locally made home brew that comprises 75% of alcohol consumed in the region, according to company estimates.

Goldman Cuts Gold Price Forecast Through 2014 as Cycle Turns

Quote
The turn in the gold price cycle is accelerating after a 12-year rally as the recovery in the U.S. economy gains momentum, according to Goldman Sachs Group Inc., which reduced forecasts for the metal through 2014.

The bank cut its three-month target to $1,530 an ounce from $1,615 and lowered the six- and 12-month predictions to $1,490 and $1,390 from $1,600 and $1,550. Goldman recommended closing a long Comex gold position initiated on Oct. 11, 2010 for a potential gain of $219 an ounce, analysts Damien Courvalin and Jeffrey Currie wrote in a report today..

Remember, when times are really s#*t, who will have the dinero to buy the friggin stuff ? Only for barter then my friend.  ;)

Long term:

Afrocentric (have great management and a gem of an asset = medscheme)
Redefine (safe bet after the Fountainhead deal went their way, great value here now and think it is reflected in the jump today I'd say)
Brait SE (everyone know this one, safe bet as well)

You know that I like GRT, so am a bit sad that they didn't prevail. Would have liked the opportunity to vote.  :-\
No doubt RDF is a fine LT as well.
Here a chart comparison over 1 year - nearly as good as Immobilier's RES  ;)

The REIT regime has arrived.

Will certainly improve marketability.
I have heard that PUT's/PLS's that comply with the requirements and want to convert will have to do so by 1/07/13.

What are your favourite stocks for the long term ?
I believe in a weakening Rand and hence hold stocks with either pure rand hedge qualities, or those that derive most of their income off-shore.
Also prefer companies that have a presence in Africa outside ZA.
BTI
SAB
SHP
BVT
APN
to name some that I hold.
Given the current and (alas) future prospects globally, I think it is important to additionally select defensive stocks, which the abovementioned are.
They may or may not be overpriced, but this is a thread for longer term investments.
Yield also plays a roll, and for that I like CML and listed property.
I also like REM and AVI which don't quite meet my aforementioned criteria.

Well the old one changed but after a bit of use I don't like the look...  :(

Prefer this forum's look!

Hmm.. I tend to agree. The change to the new Sharechat forum is like being in Disneyland - takes longer to find posts and more.
