Strange how traders think.

They are a strange breed for sure. ;)

A category-5, super typhoon named Haiyan slammed into the Philippines on Friday; Saturday 3 deaths were reported, by today expectations grew to 10 000. Asian Dow & Sensex down between -0.32% and -0.94%, rest of Asia green ranging between +0.21% and +1.30% (Nikkei).

US ended strong after better than expected eco news, futures red atm, gold @ 1286, WTI @ 95, SAT40 @ +177 atm.

Vodacom results out, rose to R36.69 billion (US$3.6 billion) for the six months ended 30 Sept from R34.43 billion previous year.  Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation R13.22 billion, previous R12.06 billion.  Other side of coin, a new low for DRD.

Consensus changes for OCE & Old Mutual to 'buy', CFR to 'hold'.

No major eco reporting today.

Good news is bad news in a mixed-up, muddled-up, shook-up world.

S&P -1.3% (biggest lost since 27 Aug), Dow -0.97%, (biggest lost since 8 Oct) & Nasdaq -1.9%.  All this after a bombshell interest rate cut in Europe yesterday & better than expected US 3rd-Q GDP which equates to tapering likely to start sooner than expected.

Asia down passionately for the same reason, gold 1310, crude 94, T40 -239 atm.

15:30 US Nonfarm & Unemployment rate
22:30 US Bernanke

New highs for Omnia, Tsogo, Billiton, SAB

Consensus to ‘buy’ for BIL, TRU.

And Foschni’s plan to double its presence in Africa over next 5 years, not going down well with -8.11% drop yesterday.

Better than expected US Service Industry numbers yesterday raised fears again of tapering starting sooner than expected leaving Dow @ -0.14%, S&P -0.28% and Nasdaq +0.09%.

ALSI made yet another all time high 45,750 & T40 also all time high @ 40,929, mostly due to the rand (down more than 1%) driving resource stocks.

Asian stock markets started mixed earlier this morning, morphed to mostly green.

Gold 1313, WTI Crude 94, US futures green atm.

New highs for BIL, CML, SAB, MON.

Quick tutorial and CFD’s don’t mix. :o

You will find that all CFD companies start off with the same warning.  'CFD’s are leveraged products and bhla, bhla, bhla…' You should listen to that, take the weekend and really ponder it and come to understand what it means.

Then, where you are going to trade eventually (PSG-online.co.za/ IG Markets.com/ (local & international access)), are good places to start with a 2-week demo account and online guidance.  But don’t fool yourself, after 2-weeks you’ll probably feel very self-assured and you’ll be gently nudged by your CFD-provider to start doing real trading.  I can promise you that at some stage during the next 2-weeks or so, you will make money and you will lose money but you will probably lose it all plus more before Christmas.

It’s tricky and only time (as in years) and making mistakes will eventually swing the odds in your favour.  So while you’re learning (again, as in years), keep it small, don’t fund your account with huge amounts of cash, (I did, made scary amounts in seconds but in the end I lost an obscene amount as well), keep you contracts manageable and take money off the table frequently.

And it is not like investing with shares, you have to be present and aware what is going on locally & internationally all the time whilst your contracts are open, yes sorry – including night time & weekends.

But in the end, it can be very rewarding and all the pain & tears eventually pays off.  And there will be tears; just make sure it is a small sniff because you were wise enough to open only a small contract. And then, never-ever forget why you’ve lost out.

See, that’s how you learn to trade CFD's, not by tutorials.

Hope I didn’t scare you; just want to make sure you’re going into this with your eyes wide open.

Good luck.

Just thought of another common and maybe the biggest mistake newbie’s make:

Remember your CFD provider is standing directly polarized of what you’re doing. So if you go long, they go short. If you go short, they go long.  Somebody’s got to lose. See the conflict of interest here? Anyway.

Hallo DLD and welcome. :)

I'm with A on this one, listen to him especially the part  'if you can't beat index, buy index.'

But don't stop there, whilst your real money is in the index, start learning and trading virtual money (as our competition) until you get it right and then but only then you start trading/investing yourself.

Oh one more thing:  Never-ever base your decision on other's opinions, even the experts. Do your own thing.

You've started an exciting journey, best of luck to you.
