I think it was a process, i.e. acquiring Conforama (French furniture retailer) in March 2011 (height of Euro crisis and anticipated collapse which didn’t happen), now they had network of 200 stores in Switzerland, Portugal, Spain, Luxembourg, Croatia.  Also acquired Leiner Group (Austria, Central & Eastern Europe).  They spread their wings when there was blood in the streets and it paid off this time, the Euro listing also helped but only happened cause of the new Euro footprint. Europe could have just as well went south (lol, then being Africa), it would have been different story altogether.

States ended last night with Dow -0.28%, Nas -0.16%, S&P -0.21%, futures positive.

In Asia this morning Nikkei +1%, both Hang Seng & Shanghai  > +1.%  at break, Sydney flat.

T40 @ 7:41am  46 370 +70 pips (+0.15%)

VIX @ 12.81 +0.75 (+6.22%), F&G @ 37 ‘Fear’

Economic Calendar:

14:30 US Core CPI (MoM) pev 0.3%, exp 0.2%
16:00 US Existing Home Sales, prev 4.89M, exp 4.97M

Alsi yesterday -0.53%, T40 -0.60%.

Anglo American Plat to sell labour intensive SA mines and will be focusing on merchandised mines in future.  Recent 5-month strike, coupled with 20% increase demands culprits. Killing the goose that lays the golden eggs;  very short-sighted, trading temporary increase for future lay-off. Maybe Sibanye with Chinese investor backup to step-up, although they have a very different work ethic than locals imo, you know, honour, duty and benefit of all mankind.  Ja, ja I know, babbling – but I feel very uninspired atm so forgive me. :(

New highs for Eastplats, Sappi, Brait, RMBH & new intraday low for Exxaro @ 13500.

Dow ended -0.94%, Nas -1.42% S&P -1.19%.

In Asia this morning Nikkei -1.2%, Hang Seng -0.5%, Topix -0.8%, Sydney flat.

Why? Cause Malaysian civilian aircraft hit by surface to air missile (BUK missile launcher) in Ukraine yesterday, Putin hints at revenge after latest sanctions implemented by US, Israel calling up 18 000 additional reservist after yesterday’s ground offensive started in Gaza, Hamas responded with ‘Israel will pay a heavy price.’
