Shares / Dividend ETFs
« on: January 06, 2016, 01:46:24 pm »
OK so I know about the DIVTRX thread but I need help understanding something:

When I look at DIVTRX and STXIND on Bloomberg the "Last Divided" values are 27.26 and 46.06 respectively. Now going by the notion of more is better, is STXIND better for dividends? Is it just a fluke?

What do those numbers mean anyway? Percentage or cents?

Thanks, it seems that you do not invest in Companies that do business in Africa. As they are looking at ways to make up monies for low commodities.
That's right JaDEB. Who's gonna be next ?

Only *INDI?

Yes, though if I said I invested in NPN, SAB, CFR, MTN, SOL, BTI, SHF, REM, APN, BVT, MNP, WHL, SHP, NTC, MPC, MDC, TBS, VOD, LHC, TRU, IPL, TFG, MND, TKG, PFG and KIO people would probably say nice companies, but aren't you over diversified!

The current breakdown in the indi is:
Consumer Goods: 40.48%
Consumer Services: 23.96%
Telecommunications: 12.45%
Basic Materials: 9.88%
Industrials: 6.7%
Health Care: 6.56%

Which to me looks fairly well covered. You could also arue that you've got plenty of foreign money involved in those companies too. The only thing I would consider adding is some financials at some time. Your thoughts?

Edit for interest sakeI checked out the erafi indi basket:
Telecommunications (36.74%)
Consumer Goods (27.07%)
Industrials (13.63%)
Consumer Services (10.8%)
Basic Materials (8.26%)
Health Care (2.05%)

That leaves me with an average of
Consumer Goods (25.5%)
Telecommunications (24.6%)
Industrials (10.2%)
Consumer Services (17.4%)
Basic Materials (9.1%)
Health Care (4.3%)

Looking at that, I would like some more healthcare...

I like it. I would add DBXWD or US to it but that's just me. Think you know a bit more about this :p

I've gone from 100% property (my house and two rental apartments) to 100% equity over the last few years.

In my case equities have far exceeded property. I have invested in unit trusts before, but I don't like the fees, so now I do an even split between the Satrix Indi and the eRafi indi in my regular portfolio and my tax free portfolio.

Don't think I could make more through CFDs, I would quite likely lose cash and gain stress.

Only *INDI?

I use FNB's Share Saver to have a sizable amount in the top40+midcap, have a TFSA with ETFs, an investment with Stanlib, an RA and some just-in-case money.

Might consider a property at some stage, but not too soon.

Other than that I play around with some spare $$$ and losing it thanks to Aspen :p

How did you invest in these shares /

Did you go via satrix  or a different company ?

Easy Equities as well. Simplest and cheapest eay to do it (and no paperwork) ;)

Not sure if it was mentioned before, but your EE investment and TFSA account now integrates with 22seven.

I went similar:

STXIND R10k
STXFIN R5k
DIVTRX R5k

Which leaves me with another R10k to play with. Might go full R10k into DBXWD, but on the other hand I can push it into DIVTRX as well and go DBXWD and PTXTEN next year.....decisions decisions.

And yes, it seems like I suffer from poor timing as well.

So the question is - sell or hold, sell or hold?

My head is telling me to hold since I do not have that much in it and that it might bounce back, but that might be naive. Maybe its run is over (we're already back to OCt 14 levels).

There's a bucket load of them by now. I know it is late but my 2c: I wouldn't bother with FNB's offering.

The reason: it is basically their Share Saver wrapped as a TFSA and the Share Saver account by itself is already very cheap to invest in (taxed of course). Since it makes no sense from a diversification point of view to invest in the Top40 twice (the Share Saver is VERY lopsided towards the Top40 which is not equally weighted), why waste the opportunity to have another "cheap" investment account (if that makes sense).

Personally, the Easy Equities looks the best to me. The STD Bank one requires you to be an OST client which requires monthly costs (if you are though it might be worth it - lots of ETFs to choose from).

My financial advisor is pushing for the Stanlib one...but she pushes only for Stanlib products. Any type of extra fee on these TFSA accounts is a waste IMHO.
