Shares / Re: REINVESTING DIVIDENDS
« on: January 23, 2018, 07:30:23 pm »
Good afternoon everyone

I usually read news websites like Moneyweb, Biznews, Fin24, etc. And I use ShareData.co.za to track my portfolio on a daily basis. However, I don't have a good way to track the dividend payout dates. What do you recommend?

ciao!
Ramon
Track the SENS for the shares you are invested in?

Total returns %
2008: (53.77)
2009: 45.16
2010: 20.51
2011: (1.72)
2012: 13.64
2013: 18.26
2014: 4.55
2015: (8.26)
2016: 13.21
2017: 18.86

3 years (including 2008) of negative performance. Also have to factor in the exchange rate but potentially it could yield rather high results.

And if we remove 2008 from its performance?

Lemme clarify: "All you need is for Bitcoin/cryptos to surge for a week and this crash (yes, crash!) will be forgotten by the fanatics."

It definitely reads like it was written by a non-technical person and I'm sure the crypto fanatics will tear it apart because of statements like "if the anonymous creators are to be believed" and they'll completely miss the point of what he is saying.

Not that he said anything new.

All you need is for Bitcoin/cryptos to surge for a week and this crash (yes, crash!) will be forgotten.

Are you refereeing to "Is this bitcoin’s crash-and-burn moment?" or other one ?
No there is a letter to the editor "Bitcoin's fall no surprise" - which I found interesting

Quote
Despite reassurances from the bitcoin faithful, we may well be seeing the beginning of the end of the bitcoin bubble (Bitcoin plunges on investor jitters, January 18). This should not come as a surprise to anyone who has bothered to seriously interrogate the nature of the phenomenon.

This unregulated digital unit, created (or "mined") at great computational effort and cost and limited to 21-million units in issue (if the anonymous creators are to be believed), was touted to become a worldwide payment mechanism. This was never going to happen, simply because bitcoin in its current guise and the numerous copycats it spawned do not meet any of the criteria of an acceptable currency.

Apart from matters such as having to be a store of at least some value, a generally accepted means of payment and a unit of account, the fundamental question of who controls the volume in circulation remains unanswered. In a sense, bitcoin units are not unlike the cereal box cards of baseball heroes or Ben 10. The euphoria of "mining" these cards evaporated as soon as the supply dried up, and you can’t even show your collection of bitcoins to your grandchildren.

That the blockchain technology underlying cryptocurrencies may well find useful application in many other areas is fairly certain. Unfortunately, the mystique surrounding the technology blinded many to the risk of investing in cryptocurrencies.

Unlike the retailers and other vendors who jumped on the bandwagon and accepted cryptocurrencies, the small guys who have already or are still to lose their investments may well receive some sympathy.

Off topic / Life cover, income protection and such...
« on: January 19, 2018, 06:19:48 am »
It is time for my fiance to get her income protection etc. sorted and to update my stuff. The company my financial advisor worked at (*cough* NMG) split their financial division into a new company called Morebo. Long story short, it seems impossible to get hold of her. No replies on LinkedIn, emails to her and her assistant's old address do not bounce but do not reply with any kind of details as to what is going on. Maybe I don't make her enough money  :(  :D

Anyway, since I'm no fan of Liberty I thought this is my chance to change from one hell to another like Discovery. Do any of you have any life insurance policies with them, know of any good financial advisors or can recommend another company? (Sanlam, Old Mutual?)

Ideally, I want the FA to sort out all this insurance crap which sometimes goes over my head. A lot of the types of cover etc. look like they overlap so any pointers will be welcome :)

Currently my thinking is to phone these guys: http://www.genesisadvisory.co.za

Nah, multiple questions and you give a random one when he signs up.

I would load that question and its key via an Ajax request and generate it client side plus a honeypot. So you'll end up with:

input 1, hidden, name="questions"
label, question text
input 2, name="answer"
input 3, hidden, name="telephone"

Reason:
1. It is generated client side so bots must support JavaScript
2. Random question so difficult to specifically target you
3. If that honeypot (telephone) comes back with a value you know a bot entered it

...or just use Google CAPTCHA

You are a brave man posting site code with db statements constructed using simple concatenation.

1=1; drop ... and all that.
