Well I was gonna go 50/50 on STXIND and DBXWD but now I'm worried about the 10% issue. Never thought of looking at the STRIX FINI though...hmmm. Choices.

Will do. I'm busy preparing my house for selling. Too much money and too much time is vanishing!
You buying another one with less maintenance or renting after the sale?

I checked yesterday. If I skipped matric and took my study money and invested it in Aspen Pharmaceuticals instead (back in 2003) I would've been worth R131,718,000 :(

...if only I knew :p

It does, between 0.4% nd 0.3% per annum depending on your balance.
But if you trade on the first trading day of the month the total fee is 0.1% + VAT...that includes STRATE, brokerage etc.

On EasyEquities the 0.25% is only the brokerage fee. STRATE is an additional R10 so for small amounts it might "hurt" a bit.

Share Saver is also one trade that gets me equal amounts of shares in the Top40 and MidCap. I can do it via EE but it will cost more I think. Plus the debit order and lump sums I put in is free since it is just transferring money from one account to another.

If I'm not mistaken there are credit card charges on EE.

Because I'm an FNB client. I only have the FNB Share Saver and I prefer it over Satrix's offerings. For everything else though I'll use EasyEquities for the time being. The full on trading platforms of FNB and STD Bank are overkill for my needs.

GT247 Has been around for quite a while. To my knowledge, if they go "bust" the only thing you'd lose would be the partial shares. The full shares will be "stored" on your account at the JSE.
I've bought some shares with the R500 that was there after the trial run. So far all looks good and the moment I have a lump sum available I'll move it there. Wont give up on my FNB account though.

ABSA's platform waives some fees if you trade more than 5 times a year...or something like that

Meh, my broker is shoving everything into Allen Grey. That's all good, but the ETFs I'm doing myself (on the side). One day when I'm more sure as to what I am doing I might ditch her but for now she is smarter than me :D

Regardless, I seem to have asked the unanswerable question :p

Shares / Which platform to use?
« on: September 10, 2014, 10:05:56 pm »
So for the last year or so I have been pumping some money into FNB's Share Saver and it has grown nicely. Thing is that I want to diversify my portfolio and buy into other ETFs (like the DBXWD) which brings me to a platform problem.

I know about ETFSA but since I took part in the Easy Equities investor challenge I'm sort off already registered and FICA'ed. As far as I understand their jargon, the moment I own a complete share on their platform it is registered/recorded against my person on some register of the FSB...or something like that. So basically I own it even if that platform tanks, right?

Since I have access to almost everything on EasyEquities, would you guys consider it a good platform to do long term investing on?

Second question: since I own RMB TOP40 shares via FNB, will those show up on other platforms or do you have to transfer it somehow? And if that is the case what will happen if I buy the same shares on two different platforms, how will they be reconciled?

 :(

Long term as in I have no plans to use any of that money anytime soon. Just extra money I put away each month.

Can one of you smart people tell me in plain English what the effect on this weak Rand and the interest rate hike will be on ETFs like Top40 and MidCap. I assume I need not worry over the long term?
