Shares / Good financial websites that are not well known
« on: March 07, 2019, 08:30:17 pm »
Hi guys, the internet is such a valuable source of info in almost everything we do in life and it got me thinking that as we find so much financial advice online from fairly well known sites surely there must be some gem websites that are hardly ever heard of and that a lot of you use almost on a daily basis for share and financial investing so would it be possible to name these sites so that we can all benefit with what they offer?

I'm thinking of sites like Just One Lap, Stealthy Wealth, etc just to name a few but there must be plenty!

Shares / Buy to let properties
« on: May 06, 2018, 04:40:13 pm »
This age old topic has led to many arguments over the years and it has got me thinking about the issue due to recent problems with tenants in one of my properties. To cut a long story short they didn't pay rental for 2 months and I thought I was going to be in for a long drawn out battle to evict them and despite getting plenty of legal advice I was resigned to the fact there is no short cut in the eviction process! I tried to reason with them in order to find a solution and obviously to hopefully get the overdue rental paid but last Sunday evening I got a text from them to say they'd moved out and then when I went to the property saw they had left it in a really disgusting state so this week I've been thinking why do I need all this stress especially now that I'm coming up to retirement age later this year? Right now my priority is to fix the property up in order to rent it out again or put it on the market and sell it and I've been going through the sums this week to see where my best options lie.

Total equity in the props I've got would be around R5.2m so with a 15-20% growth per year (it is still achievable isn't it? :D) that would give an annual return of about R750k to R1m+ so what am I waiting for? Talking to a few agents also this week and their figs for the props I have show an average price growth of about 10% per year so the decision needs to be made in the coming months do I opt for the route of no tenant stress, no maintenance issues, no damaging of property, etc or the easier route of getting invested in the numerous products available with a lot less work involved?

Anybody else in a similar scenario or maybe you guys have your own views on the subject? Would be good to hear opinions.

Shares / What happened to all the 20, 25 & 30%+ stocks?
« on: February 27, 2017, 12:25:51 pm »
Not so long ago we were reaping the rewards of stocks like the INDI, CML, etc with 20-30% annual gains being the norm but what's happened to the market and will it turn around any time soon?

Is anyone still making this type of growth or is it just a pipedream?

Shares / Oil price and Sasol
« on: January 08, 2015, 09:13:55 am »
Read an interesting piece on Sasol shares on my Money Morning newsletter today and don't know why I didn't think of it before with the oil price dropping like a stone!

Sasol was R637 in Sept 2014 but is now around the R400 mark a drop of about 37% in 4 mths with the potential to drop another 23% in the next 2 mths! If it opens below R390 the charts are saying it goes down to under R300 from R637 not so long ago!

What the opinion on this? Is it hogwash or is it a viable proposition and it would obviously pay to wait to see where the share goes before climbing in and will the oil price recover later in the year or will it be a very long recovery period?

Any views on it?

Shares / Silver

There seems to be a lot of hype presently on the silver price and the buying of silver ETF's are there any views on it? Where do you think the price is heading and what, if any, are the best silver ETF's to buy?

Off topic / Internet earning

I'm always getting, as I'm sure many of you do too, these spam emails telling how you can make money on the internet but has anyone ever actually gone into any of these schemes and made money?

Shares / DBX

We were slowly hijacking the STX INDI thread so hence starting a DBX one! Has anyone else invested in these Tracker ETF's with good results?

Shares / Fund managers - would you use them?
« on: November 28, 2013, 09:38:04 am »
I've read a lot recently about fund managers and do they justify their fees, etc but it's obviously all down to performance and if they perform then nobody can really complain about paying fees that are agreed upon when you sign up with them. How do you determine which fund manager to use? Is it through being swayed by their marketing and presence in financial media or listening to what friends and colleagues have invested in and have had success with?

I'm looking at a 3 way investment portfolio - first part with my own share picks which are not doing too badly at present, secondly I've invested a large amount in the Indi and now I'm looking at something like A Gray, Coronation, etc. Went into AG yesterday in the CT Waterfront and very impressed with their presentation, etc but just interested in other peoples choice of fund manager, how did you choose them, are you happy with your choice and what sort of returns have you had and did they live up to their promises?

Shares / Short term lump sum investment
« on: November 25, 2013, 06:03:16 pm »
Where would you invest a large amount for a short term investment ie a fixed deposit? Looking at 3-6 months so would it be best to stick it in a bank deposit or are there any other products on the market?

Shares / Two Million Rand investment
« on: August 13, 2013, 12:00:56 pm »
If you had 2 million Rand right now to invest on the stock market over a period of say 3-5 yrs where would you invest? I suppose a return of about 25-30% pa being the goal.

Would you use a combination of shares & fund managers? Any suggestions?
