Patrick, looking at some of the people who have Old Mutual shares. These guys have dividends, but the OML LDT was 19 April. The competition only started on the 22nd, so the guys would not have qualified for the divvie. I just did a quick check so please correct me if I got this wrong.

Don't want to nitpick, but I do agree with Shi. In order to qualify for a dividend you must hold the share in your portfolio at close of business day on LDT.

I will post LDT dates on a weekly basis (if I forget please remind me).

My bad... Already being posted

No man, there's many people constantly beating the ALSI, but on the other hand there is many more not beating it.
I just think k you really need to spend a lot of time to improve your knowledge.
Lastly having your money in an ETF would definitely reduce your stress.

My wife also joined, could that be the reason for the same IP? ^-^

My view is that this is an "investor" challenge, and I for one treat it like that. As the dude in charge of the investment club I'm trying to simulate what I would've done if I were to invest R400k worth of our money.
OP does have a valid point though, sure his club member would be ecstatic over that return, but less of they lost 80% odd on the day.

I know I will never win this competition as one of the guys with all their money in a single equity is bound to get it right, I use this as a measure against myself and the ALSI to see my performance.

Just to quickly derail here....
Why not clone this competition and make a trading simulation! I not sure how much work that would entail, but I'm pretty sure you going to create huge traffic and maybe really earn some moola here for all the hard work you have put in.

« on: April 23, 2013, 07:32:53 pm »

If you looking at a three year period i would not buy CML as it sits on a very high PE and would need excellent results to maintain this PE.

We are due for a bull market but the question is when  ::) 1 year, 2 or 3?

I do agree with you on your first statement, CML will really need to give steller results for quite some time to justify this price, I'm not saying it's gonna crash, nor am I selling my holding.
Simply by looking at the graph this thing is trading at a 35% premium to its 200SMA!

With your latter comment regarding the due Bull Market I assume you meant we are due for a correction? (which did start already)

Jeez dude! You truly are a legend. I've read everything and all seems awesome.

Very flippen keen to link or break the news on the other thread!

Innital feedback...

Would be nice if you could incorporate divvies later (as you said), and maybe a search function on the "buy shares" page, but I guess ctrl+f on the pc will yield the same result.

Will make some picks pretty soon!

Edit: Scrap the search function idea, nothing wrong with using ctrl+f or "find on/in page" on tablets.

Thanks for posting.

Slowly but surely contemplating a bit of a hedge here.
Was fine with the markets but all of a sudden I'm "feeling" a lot of negative sentiment out there.

Shares / Re: Can you be both a trader and an investor (tax wise)
« on: April 10, 2013, 10:50:39 pm »
I'm pretty sure you will have more than a valid point to prove to SARS that you're an investor and should be taxed at CGT rates if they accidentally tax your profits at marginal tax rates after holding the shares more than 3 years.

Just don't toss away that 10% and then start nibbling away at that 90% investment.
Sure it's fun to trade, but I think there is very very very little traders outperforming investors if you take ALL costs, taxes and time in consideration.
