Shares / I haven't worked for four years...
« on: October 10, 2017, 04:26:05 pm »
44th Birthday coming up, so suddenly hit me that i have been lounging around for 4 years! I don't think I have accomplished one project that I had planned before retiring - you know, with all this extra time  :LHST:

Oh well - think my tennis is slightly better.

Good fun   ;)

BTW lately have been topping up on SA property to a point where I can live fine on just the SA prop - from here on will take the scrip divi on oversea prop if given the option. Messed up a bit in my one year old capital gains portfolio and went way over the top with small caps - so have been trimming that back and slowly recycling funds into larger caps.

Shares / How I made 2 Million dollars

This book is frequently on the must read list of traders - well worth the read. Short book - takes a couple of hours to read at most.

What I found interesting:

How he did well when travelling, but not well when he had information overload
How he entered shares even after they had run pretty hard.
His very small stops - advantage of trend following?
Pretty much going all in on trades - 2-3 shares it seems.

Shares / My new LT CGT portfolio
« on: September 19, 2016, 05:52:06 pm »
If anyone is interested this my new small long term portfolio to eventually get the tax free portion of CGT every year - yes, I am learning! Not looking at touching it for a few years - probably 5.  At the minimum I am expecting it to double - but hoping, of course, for more. Would not be surprised if a couple turn out to be duds - but a expect some could really do well. Have used easyequities for the portfolio - it's not a huge amount of money (around R350K), and when it comes time to sell would like to just trim from a wide range of shares. Am still buying on dips, so not fully invested yet, will be though by the end of October. Yes before you ask, it's a lot of shares - I have no problem with that.

Basically have been selected on past performance, future expectations and if I think the share is trading at a reasonable price. Not all hit all those requirements of course, sometimes I just like the company!

Shares / Trying out THAT system - yes, we've all thought of it...
« on: July 08, 2016, 11:00:59 am »
Seems easy, buy shares on or before LDT - sell afterwards. Make tons of moola, buy island, declare yourself president and give the middle finger to the world. Easy.

Although not great for this task, I am using my easyequities account - although the Absa account and limit orders would be far better - if I see any success will move it to that account and up the stakes. That said, being able to use the full buy/sell amount will also come in handy, I will only use capital received to purchase the next share, and keep the dividends separate.

Debating on a rule that I can only sell at or above purchase price. Could be a long wait  :D

Should be interesting anyway.

Worth a listen

https://justonelap.com/simons-till-death-us-part-portfolio/

What would you change add?

Personally, I think the JSE would fit in there and maybe vodacom. Don't really get Metrofile as a long term hold myself. Probably would ditch the BHP as well. Might switch out metrofile for a IT stock - EOH. I would also change Shoprite to SPAR - or out the food retailer and go for Mr Price or Steinhoff. Would be hard to pick between Discovery or Aspen for the medical side. And no room for BATS? Smokers gotta smoke :)

Doing a bit of a portfolio make over as half my money was coming from a small trust and this is now being closed so will have a bit of cash to inject - luckily, div yields are pretty decent at the moment

BTW he mentions doing "site visits" as FBR's location and it being tax deductible -  I wonder how many shares you would need and how many visits would seem reasonable as a deductible expense to the taxman?

interesting. Getting in on the OTC action first.

The other two are the main board, similar to the JSE’s main board, but with a principles-based compliance model
Not sure I like the sound of that - but could be reading/understanding it wrong.

Wonder if trading cost will be cheaper. Could see EE jumping in.

Shares / Mr Div's CFD diary :: How to loose R25K in a few easy steps
« on: December 20, 2015, 02:48:15 pm »
Day 1 :: R-200

** Please Note ** You would be crazy to act on any "advice" given by me, or anyone else on this thread. I am a totally beginner and my knowledge of sharing trading could be written on the back of a match box. I am not that good at investing ether.

A week or so ago I started looking into trading CFD's - basically wanted to get involved in shorts when a certain idiot decided to fire another person. So looked into it and decided to give it a go. Had some success on GT247's demo account - so opened a live account with a tiny amount (R4000) and lost R200 the first day, Friday  :D

I am sure I will be loosing a lot more in the near future, but also plan to learn from my (I am sure frequent!) mistakes. Anyway, I thought some on here might be interested in trading and would enjoy having a giggle at my expense  :(

I have another R20K or so earmarked for this, will put it in slowly over 6 months, I am hoping after 6 months I will start to show some sort of improvement.  That said, I am really enjoying this, might have actually found the paying hobby I have been looking for. Day one, lost R80 on trades and spent R120 on fees - need to be a bit more patient.

Will see what direction the markets move tomorrow but if up, will be looking to go long on CML and possibly Sasol

actually negative on Sasol - checked the RSI

Haven't done for a while so had to unfreeze my account first, but having watched the boks play and compared their non existent game plan to the All Blacks, had to put a few thousand on the All Blacks winning even with a (-7) handicap.

At least i should not be too miserable on Saturday evening

Shares / Investing in SA or taking/leaving money overseas
« on: September 03, 2015, 04:46:20 pm »
This conversation seems to often pop up on different threads. I thought I would compare a very popular overseas fund (VSTX - vanguard total market, broad USA all share) with one of our favorite funds - the STXIND

https://personal.vanguard.com/us/funds/snapshot?FundId=0585&FundIntExt=INT#tab=1

5 Years: The info.

Dollar : 7.18 now 13.3

STXIndi - R23,96 now R63.81

VSTX $10,000 -----> $21,046

So, if you had R71800 you could have changed it into $10,000 and you would now have (21046 x 13.3) R279,911
Had you bought the STXind R71800 you could have bought 2996 STXindi shares, now worth R191,174

So although the INDI has done very well in % terms, because of the Rand,  you would have done a fair amount better had you taken the money overseas.

#####should just add, the Rand has taken a beating lately - it might recover. At the same time, what do you think would happen to the rand if say a Mr Malema came into power?

So, had R92K from the sale of my car - and as I am more than happy with my capital growth I decided to go for income. This suits my tax situation - but will not suit everyone. And personally, would not have a 100% listed property portfolio, would at least want 30% but would be happier with 50% in equities.

My idea was to try get 8% dividend yield with 8% growth on that yield per year and 8% growth on the capital. So have gone for some smaller REITS that in my opinion have something that could get them the 8% capital growth.

Accelerate APF 2977 @ 677c = R20154.29
Fairvest FVT 11525 @ 174c = R20053.50
Delta Inter (will be paying some tax) DLI 665 @ R16.77 R11152.05
Safari SAR 2200 @ 882c = R19404
Texton TEX 1950 @ 1083 = R21118.50

So, all in cost R91882.34 So looking for around R7350 income and capital growth to R100K - will update in 6 months.

Shares / ABSA's TFSA offering.
« on: July 01, 2015, 09:37:45 am »

Interesting - might use them from next year.

Although I cannot fault EE for their offerings and for guys on a limited budget they have been a breath of fresh air, my one reservation with them is that when buying individual shares, as I understand it, they are not registered in my name at compuserve. So if they go bust, you could loose everything? Or do I have that wrong?

Still think they are great for lots of smaller trades - but over a certain amount, and if you already paying for a stock account, it might be better having the money with the bigger guys. IMO

Does it all go onto income?

I just cannot get a 100% answer.
