I like his style, and unlike many others, he actually took the plunge and stopped working at 30... He's pretty US focused though, and it does seem that you have a better chance of retiring young there than pretty much anywhere else. High income, good investment vehicles, low tax and the ability to keep costs very low.

I like the idea of retiring young, not from work, but from my desk job. I quite like the idea of getting a paycheck, but I like the idea of deciding for myself how it's done even more. While I could pack up the bags and "head to Portugal" when my current contract ends in December, I have other plans (taking my boy around the world on a catamaran when he finishes school) so I'll need a pretty decent sized stash, and a contingency for the worst case scenario. Realistically I'll hang up the tie sometime during my 43rd year on this planet...

I get the sharenet daily report and Barry Hugo (Seed Capital) has a very interesting graph and narrative about retiring and what to do with your retirement investment. Those close to retiring on this forum may wish to read the article

Seems like my early retirement will happen this Friday. Was so looking forward to it but now that it is a reality feelings have changed.
Have I done the right thing? Will we make it? What if? etc.
I'm not in the 4% thing but more like 6%. I can only just live on 6%.
I started here with nothing and still have most of it left.

After 2 weeks so good. Massive CML divi next month after PNC so no tax for the next 3 months withdrawals.  :) No more alarm clocks  :TU:
What a pleasure. Wake up when I want to and keep forgetting the day of the week. Days mean nothing.
My biggest problem now will be timing the monthly withdrawals. Now where is my fishing rod?

Congratulations Orca!

What shares do you currently hold in your real portfolio?

Lot of news at the moment on how expensive the market is.

When will you move your holdings to the Stxind?

Orca doesn't need Patrick to organize discounts - its easy - visit shops in your olderst clothes have your hair unkempt and don't shave and visit the stores and ask for a pensioners discount. Builders warehouse on Wednesdays, Checkers, Clicks Dischem, Pick n Pay Spar all seem to have discounts. Now all I have to do is convince Makro to give me a discount in their liquor section - then we will experience heaven
One thing I will say about early retirement is plan at least 3 years ahead of retiring what you will do with all your new gained idle time, ensure that you have a hobby or some other interest to keep you mind ticking over - too many people retire and then try and decide what they are going to do and end up getting morose and could die earlier than the really needed to.

Sorry. Been out fishing for awhile. I can see why OCE has not been doing too well. No bleeding fish in the sea.

I'm not yet 60 so can't get pensioners discount.  :TU:

Nios. I have CML, PNC, MTA and OMN in my portfolio. As much as I would like to sell CML now, I can't. Last bought it at 24.70 and it is about 75% of my portfolio. Price is now 81.30 and the gains will be taxed as income.
My plan is to sell the day I leave SA and buy the Indi. That way, I will only pay CGT as Exit Tax.
