To get TV in English in Portugal, I would have to get Internet TV so I have been researching it for some time hence my absence here.
I was surprised to see that many South Africans have dumped their DSTV for internet TV.
Netflix and Filmon seem quite popular and can be free if no adds. Cost is the uncapped DSL internet and line rent. Much cheaper as you need internet anyway.
My biggest prob is what connection method to use to watch them on a dumb TV.
Router via WIFI to HDMI port WIFI dongle on TV.
HDMI out of my laptop to TV HDMI in port via cable.
Get an Android HDMI dongle to turn my dumb TV into a smart Android TV.
The Android dongle comes with a remote but cost is around R1 600.00.
The other methods are cheap at R350.00 but you need to get an app from PlayStore to use your smartphone as a remote.
Eish. So many methods and still dunno what to do.

That TV is just tooooo expensive. Much cheaper to get an Android dongle and plug it in your old stupid TV and ... Voila. You have a smart TV running on Android.

That's the way to go. Turns any TV with HDMI into an android device. I set it up at the office so we could display custom text on our TV screens. Some even come with a webcam for skype. Make sure you get an airmouse.

Looks like that's the way to go P. I can import the Android dongle from China for half the local price. Quad core and 1.6GHz would be fast enough for streaming video.
Just for interest sake, only the HDMI ports are 1080p for HD. The VGA is 1024 and S-Video is even lower.
Must Google the airmouse. Is it not a simple bluetooth mouse?

You could use a bluetooth mouse, but the airmouse works better with a TV. It's like a combination of your finger, a mouse and a keyboard.

Where does the feed come from? Surely you need some type of subscription based service like Netflix/Hulu?
Are there any local co's providing a feed?

Forgot to add Orca, you could also use an Xbox 360. Some folks at the office use it for Netflix. Sure you could pick one up for a good price now seeing as the Xbox One is being released shortly in SA.

Chromecast is only supported in the United States.

Has anyone actually ditched DSTV in favour of internet tv?
I have read some threads on this forum regarding the topic but I am still somewhat confused.
I am just about to purchase a new T.V and a DSTV decoder and Dish.
I was investigating getting internet tv,but it seems that in general, its just not very reliable in day to day applications.
The main reason for getting DSTV will be to get the sports for my dad who isn't very internet savvy.
We don't have internet at home so that will be used sparesly at home if we get ADSL.
So I have 2 questions.1.Should I buy an older non-smart tv, with a DSTV package(decoder etc) or a more expensive smart tv with the option of using internet tv in the future?
2.Is it worth getting ADSL and streaming sports and movies?
I don't mind paying subscriptions for netfix, hulu and maby a VPN. And.And then getting it setup.
However,my dad is not internet savvy.How hard will it be to choose and watch content from someone who is not savvy with technology after the whole setup is completed?
How reliable is it to stream sports and movies and so on in real world applications?
