Curious what rate of return you used in the calculator? That will also have an effect on the outcome.
Might be nice to have this as one of the inputs - e.g. a balanced fund (e.g. RA/Pension/Preservation) in theory will have a lower return than a pure equity fund (e.g. TFSA)

Yes good point. I'm using 6.8% over inflation. I don't have figures for a typical South African balanced fund return gross of fees, any ideas?

Good question! :)
I usually guesstimate ~15% for pure equity and ~10-12% for balanced (i.e. inflation +9 and inflation +4-6% respectively)
